Please help with Gas Pedal Problems

    I have a 2001 Prius, approximately 8 months ago the car would slow down (not stall) with no reaction from the gas pedal. when it became more than an "occasional" thing, took it to dealer, they diagnosed the gas pedal position sensor and advised that it would only cost a little over 600 dollars to fix. naturally, I waited. the quick fix at the time was to stop, shut off the engine, restart and continue on, and the problem appeared to have fixed itself because it hasn't happened in 3 or 4 months. Our new problem is that instead if slowing down, it revs up (all the way up, even in neutral) with no response from the accelerator pedal. Can anyone tell me if these two (completely opposite) problems are related to the same "gas pedal position sensor", if so, what, if any, other options do I have? And just for the record, we DON'T have floor mats in the car.

    The two problems appear to both be related to the accelerator pedal sensor failure. As this has become a safety issue, I recommend that you immediately have the pedal replaced.

    If you wish to save some money, you may decide to buy the pedal at a discount price and DIY install. 78010-47031 can be purchased for $343 plus shipping:

    would a 04 and up pedal work with the NHW11?

    i have this issue, but it happens very rarely, driving between 40-60 most of the time.

    maybe ill get some resistance values from the NHW20 pedal and compare it to the NHW11

    No, the NHW20 uses Hall Effect sensors and the NHW11 has a dual, wiper, pot:

    BTW, the accelerator can be rebuilt by disassembling the encoder, cleaning the contacts, retension, and reassembly. However, you should first make sure the connectors are secure.

    Since you're over at Ft. Payne, send me a PM and I may be able to drive over and take a peek at it.

    BTW, I had one accelerator assembly come in with a bent encoder arm. It was on the verge of sticking:
