Toyota Unveils MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept

Toyota adds yet another feather in its cap. The much talked about MR2 Hybrid concept from Toyota was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon with its G Sport Series FT-86 and Prius. This Hybrid study based on the third generation MR-S (ZZW30) would serve as the background for sports car very soon.

Yeah I was about to say, it looked like the old MR-2 lol.

Ok good, so it's still under consideration. Hopefully it will turn out better than the CR-Z.

Tokyo Auto Salon: Toyota Brings the Passion - Motor Trend

Motortrend has some other facts. The show car is 3300lbs but toyota expects it to be slimmed down to that around 2900lbs for production

lol. This thing will be a true super car going 0-60 in around 4 1/2 seconds. The cr-z is a sporty looking hybrid. The toyota grmn sport hybrid will cost a lot more than the cr-z. They won't be in the same price class or performance class.

Are you sure you're not confusing it with the LFA? That's a super car. The MR-2 is not.

I think austingreen is pointing out the MR-2 mentioned within the link which mentioned a whole slew of sports hybrid that *might* get into production within the next couple years.

Incidentally, the elderly gentleman that you see in the MR2 clip is Hiromu Naruse himself.

He was one of test driver involved in the Lexus LFA super car development. He is also present in the LFA promotion video.
He's contribution must have been critical in Toyota recent re-entry into the sports arena.

So they literally took a MR2 Spyder and dropped a hybrid drivetrain in it.

Looks like mine, except for it being on the side of a mountain and all.

Hey... so there's that photo lol. We never got that generation in Canada (And it wasn't allowed to be imported). Ours ended in 1997.

I'm sure they did a little more than that. Carbon Fiber body to save weight, and not just a little drive train. I'm sure they improved the steering, suspension, and brakes. Then its not just like dropping a 6 cyclinder in a 4, the drive train is completely different. 400 hp 4wheel drive with an electric front axle and mid engine v6/electric rear axle. That sounds like a totally new vehical that started with the good bits and pieces of their last sporty car to build a true hybrid sports car.

The old mr2 competed against miata and came up short in the "feel" department. If toyota gets this right its more of a boxter competitor, with more hp and dependability. I hope they build it.

Isn't this the concept that was shown in Germany a year or two ago? It was a hybrid with a V6 that was based on the MR2. As I recall, it was a sedan though.

Bring it to market with an HSD, better yet a plug-in HSD, and I will definitely buy one! :)

If anyone has followed this car and the Supra this is surely the mule for it. Expect a 400hp hybrid sports car.

It's been a mule for some years now....
