You missed something. If you have the elearnaid kit then the D51 does indeed drop in after you swap the clamps. There should be no major piece of metal, no crooked, no problem. If you are still having trouble after a second read through the instructions then maybe take a few pics so we can see what's going on.

I just installed one over the weekend (2005) w/o any problems. I can't think of any piece of metal that needed to be removed. I did need to remove the plastic air vent to help with access. Definitely nothing needed to be bent so, like brick said, please post pics or re-read the instructions.

Optima D51 is the only one that fits in the Prius. Is yours a D51?

Soon someone will be along to claim we lied about every Optimia battery in the world fitting in a Prius and that that proves we should not be trusted about global warming either. Sigh.

(That whole elearnaide kit is just altering the raw data on Optima batteries)

After 4 posts, you still not able to tell whether you got the D51 size Optima battery. Just keep saying you got it from an auto store.
Admit you got the wrong size battery and not blame PC lied. LOL.

You can't vent the one you have can you? You need to vent it outside the car just like the other one. You can get it on amazon for like 140 shipped, just do that and return yours :)

I agree that you got the wrong one. I also installed one myself this past weekend with no problems.

The battery buyer needs to know what size to ask for, especially for a non-standard application like this. Just like any other car battery, the YellowTop comes in multiple sizes and configurations. From the Optima web site:

    D31A (8051-160) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery
    D31T (8050-160) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery
    D34
    (8012-021) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery

    D34/78 (8014-045) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery
    D35 (8040-218) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery
    D51 (8071-167) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery
    D51R (8073-167) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery
    D75/25 (8042-218) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery

So my 200 pound 8D marine battery won't fit in my Prius? This is *another* reason I should have bought a Volkswagen TDI. ;)

Don't just ignore the venting question either, they need to vent outside the car for some reason. I have no idea if it's important or not, but it's required.

Its required because if the battery needs to vent it will vent hydrogen gas. You don't want that gas in the cabin because it can explode.
