I"ve been looking at buying a Prius for some time and something is confusing me. I want to make sure that what ever I buy is a package 2 because of the SKS feature that my wife loves on my Nissan.

I was under the impression that the Base Prius was the entry level and therefore was not a package 2. I've called a couple of dealers on cars and they tell me that the car is a Base Prius but the pictures clearly show the SKS system.

My question is what is the difference between the Base and Standard model of the Prius and can the Base have the Package 2 or SKS on it? Or does the dealer just have the wrong pictures posted online?

I have a base 2008 Prius, and it does *not* come with SKS like my Altima. Actually, the base doesn't even come with cruise control, tonneau cover or seat pockets behind the front seats. Fortunately, the dealer at least installed cruise control on mine and I purchased a tonneau cover on ebay. But -- no SKS. I'm actually a *little* glad because I've read where it can slowly drain your battery over a period of time if you aren't driving the car, which may be more of an issue with the Prius.

SKS may be the best feature on the whole car. Really.

Yeah, it's nice on my Altima, so I know it's a nice feature. Still -- battery drainage problems are not walk in the park with the Prius (depending on how much SKS contributes to that problem). Otherwise, it is definitely convenient.

I don't know about the 2010 but the 2nd Generation Prius came in a "Base" and a "Touring" edition. "Base" doesn't mean basic, however.

The only differences are that the Base model has 15" wheels, a shorter spoiler and softer suspension. Other than that, the option packages are identical for the Base and the Touring.

We have a Base and a Touring, both package 6, and they have all the same optional gizmos, including SKS.

I must have misunderstood how Toyota categorized it. I'm sorry -- I wasn't paying attention where the OP mentioned Package 2.

I prefer the 08 model over the 10 model because the package 2 was inexpensive and in most cars in 08. That included the stability control, magic key and backup camera. I understand the backup camera is now available only in more expensive packages in the 10. I find the backup camera is most useful, oddly enough, turning around in my driveway, so I don't go into the grass. It's very good for seeing very close behind you, but not for much distance perspective. e.g., backing up my driveway.

The only reason I'm confused is I was looking at the Toyota Certified website looking at what was available. Some of the 2008's state Base and others just state Prius Hybrid Hatchback. By seperating them out it made me think there was some difference between the 2 but it appears to just be the way Toyota is listing them on their website.

There were some other differences as well including the touring base including fog lights and HID headlamps as I recall.
