Klingons and Romulans are close. Vulcans? Hmm, I don't think that they are quite so closely related. I'd have to do some research on that.

I do agree that Vulcan females must be pretty tough... pon far seems a little bit wild. It's that 7-years between that would make me crazy.

 

Until lately, I think most people would have imaginged Tiger Woods going to a ST convention as a Vulcan, but now he is in a sex addiction program, which stipulates NO SEX of any kind.

 

According to at least some histories, the Romulans are descended from the Vulcans who left rather than accept Sarek's teachings of salvation through logic.

As for the seven years, not to worry. One has no sexual urges during that time. One can carry on one's life logically without ever having to worry about bothersome things such as sex. And pon farr is more than a bit wild. You do it or die.

 

As far as we know, the 7-year cycle was for vulcan males. Vulcan females may have been receptive year-round, or perhaps stimulated to receptivity by the proximity of males undergoing pon far. (Vulcan phermones anyone?)
If both genders underwent 7-year cycles, imagine the odds of hooking up with a receptive mate just at the time you need one. (Vulcan dating sites anyone?)
Otherwise, the whole vulcan population would have to go through pon far simultaneously. Worse than St Pats day I imagine.

At the time of their betrothal, I believe there was some kind of ceremony that linked the couple's cycles.
