My wife and mother in law safely escaped the fire. Houston neighbors and firefighters responded immediately.

As to our 2006 Barcelona Red Metallic Prius, you were taken too early, and we must replace you.

    Then and now:

Yikes! Was it a house fire that spread to the car or vice versa? I can't even begin to imagine how complicated things will be for you having to deal with that now. Glad to hear everyone is OK.

You could probably buff that out, maybe start with a clay bar. :brick:

Any idea how the fire started? Not the car, I hope. Glad to hear no one got hurt. Everything a total loss?... stuff can be replaced, not that it doesn't incur hardships anyway, but loved ones are not replaceable.

    You have good neighbors, too!

Oh my! I bet the house and car insurance company's will be busy with this one. Glad everyone is safe. Sorry for the losses but just think now you can get a 2010 prius and not to mention a rebuilt house! BTW, did the gas tank explode? How much gas was in it at the time?

Yes I would think that when the fire engulfed the vehicle and the wire insulation melted on the hv lines it would cause a short and rather quickly deplete the hv battery. Not to mention the service plug is plastic and would probably fall out. But not sure on this one, looks like the fire was mainly in front and passenger areas.

If it was parked and off, the relay in the HV pack should have been off, de-energizing the HV lines.

Do we yet know where the fire started -- car, or house?

I've looked at the before and after pictures and I'd just like to say I think that's the worst Mod ever. I've heard of people putting "flames" on their cars but not the aftermath. The rims look really bad too.

(seriously? glad you're okay. Looks like a pretty devastating fire, hope you can find some "enjoyment" in getting that new Prius and get things back in order a.s.a.p..)

Thanks, gents. With 20 degree weather the insurance agent leans to the theory that instead of searing 90+ heat in the garage, the freezer may have set the auto defrost repeatedly, thus possibly overheating its circuits/wiring to the outlet.. So far just a theory, as the garage then burned the Prius then the attic spaces in the house. Kudos to the Houston fire department--they covered all the furniture with heavy plastic--the furniture was saved from the water and is being reconditioned.

Ah yes I forgot about the relay in hv pack. This is true that it would be off if the car was off. So glad everyone is ok archiveman, and glad to hear you're pretty sure it was not the prius that started it. I park two of them in my garage and have often wondered "what if?"
