Is it true that Ford and GM have aggressive incentive programs for Toyota owners that are afraid of sudden acceleration?

GM: yes. I'm not sure about Ford.

Yes, Ford and GM are both offering $1000.00 incentives if you trade in a Toyota involved in the recall.

In the Gulf States Region, not sure about the others there is now for February a $1000.00 owner loyalty on all Toyotas including Prius. If you own a Toyota, Lexus or Scion that would qualify you for $1000.00 owner loyalty rebate.

Well, after GM marks up the used Toyotas & resells it, they WILL be selling their customer a more reliable car.

    :p

You know, I said something in the What Drives Us podcast last week about whether Toyota's competitors would begin campaigns like this. Everyone else said no :)

I don't see the sleazy part of this. There are enough chicken littles on this site alone to populate most countries in the world. Certainly enough to make a huge profit for whoever captures them (although they will then have to listen to them whine.)

I believe that Hyundai also has an incentive program.

This is just a program to test for critical thinking skills.

I've read some articles suggesting incentive programs are being offered by competitors.

I guess all is fair in love and war and automobile sales.

I read one article that said a Honda Dealer had their electronic sign read "Our Cars Gas Pedals Don't Stick".

So yes, it's going to get ugly and sleazy on some levels.

Although they didn't specifically name Toyota, the Saturday newspaper had a bunch of ads for dealers promoting the safety of their cars.

    Yes, Hyundai has joined too...

Hyundai matches incentives for Toyota customers from Ford, GM — Autoblog

And yes, it is going to get ugly...

The joke in the TDI forum is that the Prius is not included in the recall because it wouldn't make any difference if the pedal sticks... :D

Oh, that's priceless! I have to give it to the TDI fanboys on that one.

Yep, and I will be picking up my 2010 RAV4 next week, to include a replacement accelerator pedal and an additional $1,000 off for the loyalty rebate.

Kinda feel like I'm kicking Toyota while they're down, but I haven't offered the $1,000 back either. I've owned a total of 5 Toyotas over the years, 2 of which I still have. That's $200 per. I'm still a loyal Toyota owner, even after all of this.

Ok, say your Toyota trade-in is worth $3,000 according to NADA. Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds. Do you think they'll offer you $3,000 plus $1,000? No way. They'll tell you the car is worth $1,500-$2,000 and tell you how fortunate you are to be getting an additional $1,000. Smoke and mirrors.

    I am TOTALLY SHOCKED !!

GM under Lutz has changed its marketing strategy. As you can see from the Howie Long ads all through December they're pointedly telling the public that certain vehicles are kicking the daylights out of Honda and Toyota in room and fuel economy. Some of this is valid but some is cherry-picking data. Yes one Malibu is more fuel efficient than all Camry's...but only if you order the LT or LTZ trim levels at a premium...but if you want any other model then NO, the Malibu's are not more fuel efficient than their Camry counterparts. OK this is agressive.

I firmly believe that GM is doing something it's never done before too. It's using the internet forums as a weapon. Herein and on sites like Edmunds anybody can say anything they want without retribution, it's all anonymous. Since mid-December there has been a significant increase in the volume of calls for Toyota's head on a platter across forumville.

This latest tactic of sticking a dull stick in Toyota's PR wound by offering Toyota traders $1000 to switch is GM's idea. Ford and Hyundai for competitive reasons are meekly following GM's lead. Honda has refused.

The GM fanboi's are all over this...'Yeah, 'bout time'...'Kill'em all like they did to our jobs'....'Death to Toyota.' It plays well in downtown Detroit and Lansing and Flint.

I'd be very confident that once this initial brouhaha blows over that the next thrust will be .... 'Look at all the class action suits being filed against Toyota.'

An honest question: Why is this thread in the Hybrid and Prius news section? It's basically nothing but GM/Ford bashing. I mean I wouldn't buy either marque either, but seriously?

Don't feel special because GM will give a Toyota owner $1000 off. If you own a GM...$1000 off. If your breath fogs a mirror...$1000. No matter who walks in there will be some criterion under which they qualify...for $1000 off.
