    Hello-

I've owned my 2010 Prius V about a month, and I've had this grabby brake problem occur four times. It's really an irritating problem, and I will be sure to relate it to the dealer during servicing.

I would tend to agree with other posters here who associate the problem with sitting in the car while it is in the 'accessory on mode' for a while. If you then start the car, and try to back up, that is when it occurs for me.

OK, it happened to me again today, in Drive not reverse. The car has 6070 miles.
We came out from the grocery store so the car had been sitting for 10 minutes or so. Foot on brake, push the pwr button, very slight incline so I kept my foot on the brake but let off just enough to creep forward. I had to stop for a car and that's when it started grabbing. The 'travel' on the pedal came way up and it had the very hard feeling and was impossible to stop without jerking. I just stopped and shut the car off and re-started and all was normal again. Although many have tried, I'll try to replicate the conditions and see if it's repeatable.

I have had it happen going forward once, and backward about 5 or 6 times in 5000 miles.

For me, not associated with accessory mode.
In backing, more often when starting to back down a slight incline. But, at least once on the flat. Always just after starting the car. Last time, shifting to N and D then back to R did not "cure" it.

I have been keeping an eye on this grabby brake problem for a while. My 2010 has 3000 miles+ so it is well broken in. This problem has been occuring since I got the car two months ago. It has nothing with running accessory mode prior to starting or what so ever. It just happens when I back out the car from the garage. Even thought it doesn't happen every time but it is becoming a concern for me. I hope Toyota notice this fault through this forum and issue a fix for it soon.

" I hope Toyota notice this fault through this forum and issue a fix for it soon."

Based on how they've handled the current issues, I don't think so. Moreover,
with the current recalls going on, for sure they don't need more issues or have time
to read this forum (no irony intended).

Yes, I have also experienced this issue since I bought the car. It happens randomly,
mostly when I pull the car out of the garage.
With so many complains in this forum, isn't it time that we, the owners, take action?
Personally, I called a few dealers; all of them are not aware of the issue; very curious!
I checked the NHTSA site, and there's no defect under investigation for 2010 Prius.
Not sure NHTSA complain is a solution, so does anyone have a suggestion for action?

The brake pedal gets very stiff and then goes back to normal after pumping several times.
    See video:
[ame=http://www.vimeo.com/9170569]Strange Brake Issue on 2010 Prius on Vimeo[/ame]

I noticed the problem most often after sitting with the ignition on (listening to the radio at lunch) and then backing out of a parking space, but I cannot reliably reproduce it 100% of the time.

I heard on the radio this morning that the Japanese government has ordered Toyota to investigate the brake problems being experienced on the Prius both in Japan and America.
They did not say whether it was the lock-up problem you have had or the brakes letting go over rough slippery ground.
Hopefully they will fix both problems.

I have experienced the same sensitive brake feel--only backing up.
    I do love that car!

Will the brake recall have any effect on the reverse break thing?

I still get the sticky brakes in reverse thing every once in awhile. Not a huge deal, but annoying to turn the car off and I again so I can back up without lurching all over the place...any idea if the propsed fix will have any effect on this?

I have the same reverse braking problem too. I complained about it to the dealer, and like the braking drop-out thing, they said "That's how it works. You have to get used to it."

I have experienced this reverse braking problem about 4 or 5 times during my 7 months and 6000 miles of ownership. This definitely happens much more frequently than the brake drop-out issue which has occurred to me once in the last 7 months.

I complained about both issues to the dealer. The dealer politely told me that "that's how it works" and basically brushed me off.

BTW, the way I get around the reverse braking issue is that I turn off the car (Ignition Button), and then turn it back on again. It seems to clear the problem everytime.

are the brakes wet or was it raining in the last days before.
I have the same problem with a Ford, after rain.

Nah...it happens randomly in my car...in fact, it didn't happen at all when we were getting drenched a couple weeks ago, but it happened last night just pulling out of a driveway...it clearly behaves differently when it happens, and rebooting the car fixes it. Very weird...

It's most likely about the braking on rough roads. I don't think the lock-up problem has come to their attention at this point.

This is the problem I continue to have since September. I think the owners of the vehicles with this problem should file a formal complaint. This is serious and should be addressed with the other braking issues.

If they are going to the considerable expense to "update" the firmware,
it would be a shame to not fix the "Unexpexted Agressive Movement on Startup" problem.

Happened to me also. There was some rain today with an outside temp was 60. I had driven 1/2 mile, parked and came back 10 minutes later. When backing out of the parking space the brakes grabbed very aggressively although I was stepping on the brakes lightly. I tried to press more lightly on the brakes a second and even more lightly a third time, but still the very aggressive brake grab. We have had the car two weeks, this is the first time this has happened. I back out of the driveway typically multiple times a day and had not had this issue.

When it happens on mine, very rarely I might add, I only need to put it in park and then back in reverse to clear the problem. Still a nuisance, but quicker than waiting for it to boot up again.

I have experienced the same thing, could this be that problem that they (Toyota) are currently researching?
