Picking up a Gen III Prius IV in a week and have few questions...

    1. I am debating with or without solar roof. I live in CA and hope to take the advantage of the solar roof when 90+. Is it worth it? Is it really cool down to 7X when turn on? If I leave it under the sun for 8 hours, is it really blowing air/circular interior air during that 8 hours?
    2. My wife, daughter and I all have mobile phone. If we all 3 jump into car which phone the BT will pair? Is it the last or default user? Is there enough time for us to change the BT user in the phone screen in order to use the speaker phone in the car when someone call?
    3. How much monthly payment of the roadside service? I assume it is similar like OnStar, right?
    4. When I sat in Prius II, I noticed there is a real time display for the MPG that we are using. I don't notice that in Gen III Prius. Is there such thing I can see while I'm driving?
    5. I hear that will be a recall for any production date before 01/10 in upcoming week. Do you think Toyota will do some 0% APR or cash incentive?
Thanks for all your answers in advance!

If it's like the 2nd gen, it'll only connect to the one that's selected, so I guess you could call it default or last. The nav system can remember multiple cell phones but only one at a time is selected.

As for enough time to change it over when there's an incoming call? Not really. Also much of the nav system is locked out if you're moving above 3 mph.

As for mpg display, all that stuff got moved to the MID Hope 2010 Toyota Prius: Multi-Information Display Video | PriusChat and Autoblog Green helps. There's also an instananeous mpg graph/bar to the right of the speedo.

As for incentives, maybe. 0% financing? I think that's less likely.

    1. The solar roof only help a little bit. It still very hot inside. It also add 70lb to the weight of your car and increase gas consumption.

    2. Blue tooth selection is default to the last connected. If the phone is paired to your phone last time. When both you and your wife get in the car at the same time. It will connect to your phone. If your wife use your car alone, it will connect to her phone and stay connect to her phone until you use the car alone. But there is manual selection to change it back to you, but no way you can change it in time if someone call.

    3. No idea, not available in Canada.

    4. Yes, there is a small MPG bar display. If you select the bar graph screen. You can select to display either 5 minutes average or 1 minute average.

    5. No one know if there will be a recall. There should be a fix sometime but most likely it won't be a recall because Toyota refuse to admin that is a design fault yet. I don't think they will offer 0% APR at the moment.

Around here one can buy the Prius under invoice. How much more incentive do you want?

Safety Connect is free for the 1st year. Make sure your salesman registers your car with them before you leave the lot.

The fan will run as long as it is activated and the Prius is parked in direct sun. Cloud cover, overcast, shade or hazy days will result in the blower either not running or at reduced performance. It will make the Prius's internal temperature come within a few degrees of the ambient outside temperature.

The fee for Safety Connect is $139.95 per year after the first year. The first year's service is at no charge for vehicles equipped with Safety Connect.

    1. The SR option has only been out for one summer so the verdict is out on it. The one I respect who is now on his 3rd Prius picked up his 2010 on July 1st. He drives 45,000 miles per year; he's in it 10-12 hours a day; in and out of the vehicle maybe 50 to 100 times daily. It's his office.

He thought it was a gimmick but he wanted the SR. He has since found that it is fantastic for keeping the vehicle at ambient temperature whether that's 80 or 85 or 97 degrees. Whatever it is outside is what it is inside. Not 120 or 130 degrees. But he doesn't use the remote AC button. He could but he doesn't. This will lower the temps even lower yet so instead of it being 97 inside and outside it might get down to 85-ish which is a lot more bearable.

    3. Answered above. Free for the 1st yr; $139 ( now ) annually thereafter

    4. In the Gen 2s there was the real time 'biofeedback' graph on the consumption screen. They moved it on the Gen 3 to the right side of current speed in the semi-HUD on the left. It's a curved graph from 0 to 100 mpg ( l/100 km ). It's always there right in your line of sight not off to the right.

There are still graphs of your trip fuel economy in one of the six DISP screens on the upper right part of the semi-HUD. To get the actual numeric values for a given tank or trip then you have to set your trip meter A to zero then take note of it at the end of the trip or at the next fillup ( reset to zero again ). I'd leave the trip meter B alone and let it accumulate all the miles for the entire ownership of the vehicle.

    5. I wouldn't be surprised. Toyota has a lot of money and a lot of money to spend on making things right.

Really appreciated all your inputs. Will wait until mid to end of next week and if no extra incentive/0% APR then will pick one up end of next week. Thank you everyone!

    1. It'll cool it to the ambient temperature (at least close to it) so in your example, that would be 90 if it's 90 outside (cause it's probably more like 170 instead). If the sun is strong for those 8 hours, yes it will be running the fan to bring in cooler outside air and vent the hot air out. You can further cool the car by activating the A/C using the Remote A/C button on the fob. To get best results, point the solar panels (i.e. the back of the car) south. (CA might be south enough that it doesn't matter but it makes a difference for us living in more northern latitudes).

I will add that it doesn't need direct sunlight to run. It will run on whatever power it can get so it's not like it's either continuously running or it's off. It will run intermittently depending on sky condition.

    2. Last user/paired phone. If you're not the driver, why would you want to use the BT function in the car? If everyone wants in on the convo, you can always use the speaker phone function on the cellphone itself. If you're the driver, then I suggest switching paired phones before you start off so the driver's phone is paired with the car.

    4. Yes but it's now a digital meter located to the right of the speedo (opposite the fuel gauge).

    5. Depends on your region.

    Sun roof, mmm
It does keep the car cool , like said before
But I hate the fact it is so noise when opened,
I had asked other poeple before we got it they said it was not.( there was no car to test drive at the time)
I guess these people has worst hearing then me

But the wife does like the fact it brights up the inside of the car when the sun shade is open

Any sunroof which is soiler kind is noise

BT , for me it is a pain in the a$$, I like my BT headset better, maybe if it had my contacts in it would be better
Also a number of time when calling out I hear nothing but people on the other end can hear me, as they will phone me back

I live in southern CA. The solar roof is great, even though I've only had it since the end of November with a limited number of "hot" days to test the fan. There is no beating having the top open on a nice day, especially when driving in the mountains where an open roof improves the view! I can carry on a conversation or listen to music with the top open, so the noise doesn't bother me. On the other hand, one of my other cars is an '87 Landcruiser, one of the all-time noisiest vehicles to drive. Yes, you can display real-time MPG.
