Gov't Gets Complaints About Toyota Corolla About 80 Drivers Say Steering Has Problems

WASHINGTON -- Federal safety officials say they will look into complaints from Toyota Corolla drivers about difficulty with the steering on their vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received about 80 complaints from drivers of 2009 and 2010 Corollas. Many say their cars can wander when they drive on the highway, making it hard to stay in lanes. NHTSA said it will determine if a formal safety investigation is warranted. But agency officials also stressed that it is standard procedure to review the tens of thousands of driver complaints they get every year on a wide range of vehicles. Toyota's safety issues are under intense scrutiny due to recalls over gas pedal problems. The company recalled its Prius hybrids Monday night.

I wonder - did these 80 people just leave an establishment that served adult beverages in quantity?

So there is absolutely nothing wrong with Toyotas aside from acceleration, brakes and steering. Good to know.

At least, so far, we are still safe while standing still. I'm holding my breath and keeping my fingers crossed...

You don't remember the posts about the couple of Classic Prius batteries that caught on fire while the cars were parked?

Well, I still shake in my boots remembering the report of an exploding Prius.

It could happen to anybody... Right?

Actually, it was a case of arson/vandalism.

I still think that Toyota should recall the sidewalk to prevent a recurrence.

So if I'm unlucky, I won't be able to steer off the roadway after my brakes fail following uncontrolled acceleration? Wow.

But when you crash, you can be confident that the seat beat buckles won't fail (my household's Ford, Honda, and Acura, simultaneously, years ago) and the air bag won't be lethal in itself (today's Honda recall).

Good to know. But I just read that I will be unlikely to even drive my new Prius because I won't have forward power due to the new traction control issue.

My plan now is to wait it out. Good thing I have a good 'ol GMC to drive in the mean time. Once all Prius problems are discovered I'll get the car back to the dealer for all recall services to be fixed at one time.

Oh, wait. If I do that, the battery will drain in 17 days or less. D**m. I am so screwed.

Better roll it into the garage backwards, so the tow truck can easily reach and lift the locked front wheels.

If you do this, at least you can leave it in the garage without fear that the ignition switch or cruise control switch or power window switch will burn down your house. Leave your Ford and Honda parked outside.

A friend called in a "panic" from his cell phone while driving his suburban in heavy traffic to express his fears - seems he had a Toyota beside him, and one in front and one behind. He figured the one behind would go into instantaneous unintended acceleration while the one beside him would start to swerve. His only way out was that he hoped the one in front would experience brake failure, causing it to continue forward and providing him enough room to get away from the other ones. :D

Before all this the only kidding I had to take was from our daughter who kept offering D-cells to power my toy car...

I don't know. From Toyota's POV I'm sure nothing is funny anymore. But for me, I go with a pendelum, I swing from concern to being punch drunk from the media.

Yesterday with the announcement of the Prius Recall and the inevitable media firestorm it caused, I found mysef musing about better PR days for Toyota. I imagined Toyota hiring The Blue Man Group to announce the Recall.

I just like the idea of a silent pantomime abstractly explaining the "braking issue" and encouraging owners to return their cars for update. I'm getting tired of Recall announcements and Toyota executives apologizing. Let's spice it up.

It is good to see folks taking the lighter view of this. Maybe that is what Toyota management should do in order to lighten the mood. I mean, really.......?? Corollas's are all over the place and they are talking about 80 people.
I wish all the little cockroaches would scurry back under the walls and that Toyota sales (especially Prius) increase just to show the propaganda wagon that folks are getting smarter and not easily manipulated by gas prices or media hysteria.

How about they re-shoot the bizarre flower commercials and have the flowers starting to turn brown and sickly, then get all pretty again when they are sprayed with a tank of RECALL!

I also thought about the Prius being unable to stop and running through the field with little kids dressed as flowers being knocked out of the way, but not everyone would see the humor in this...:D
