So I finally changed out my HIDs -- following windstrings' sans-bumper-removal instructions.

Holy crap was that time consuming. Those caps really were stuck on there!

I stupidly started off with the driver's side which took over an hour to figure out -- stopping once to check some user's YouTube video. After that I started unscrewing the washer fluid container for the passenger side bulb but gave up and just squeezed my hand in the opening. Bah! This one took 10 minutes.

I put it all together and ended up dropping two of the plastic fasteners into the abyss/engine compartment.

Ah well. Better than spending several hundred dollars. Let's see how long these last

    Thanks again, windstrings!

LOL!.. your welcome!.... It took me a good couple hours the first time too.... its one of those things that once you do it, you can do it again in a fraction of the time.

Certainly is a nice feeling knowing you can do it rather than be at the mercy of the man!

Its getting to where this is little more complicated than changing halogen light bulbs.... once you figure out the details.

I find changing brake pads are the same way... once you do it once on your particular car, its no big deal..... thankfully, that's one thing we will rarely have to do on the prius!

After much reading with pictures and video from this forum, I changed my HID bulbs. It took less then 1 hour to do both just removing the plastic top cover and the fuse box.

This was actually easier than replacing my fog lights by sticking my arm up the side plastic. That took some time.

I'm about to order new HID bulbs for my 2006. Where did you buy your new bulbs from? What was the part number? Where the bulbs that you removed the original bulbs. If so, can you let us know what information (manufacturer, part number, etc.) was written on the base of the original bulbs? Thanks.

YOur welcome.. if mine ever go out again.... I'll prob get those again... simply because I don't want to pay more and the cheaper ones I don't trust... I"ve heard several stories......

I"m sure there are some better bargains.. but these things are too much hassle to put in to just "ask" for trouble for a few bucks savings!

    I had that problem too.

Your posting saved me hours and hours of time!

I just did this yesterday, and wrote up a how-to, which I will try to link after making my obligatory 5 posts (forum rules)

Thanks for the tip. I got mine there too.

I think I've been inspired to change my own HID bulb. My 05 has pinkeye on the passenger side. I've read part (although not all) of this thread, and have seen the videos. I managed the damn block heater, and think I can manage this, too. I'm leaning towards the bumper pull method just to eliminate the nearly blind replacement by feel, as I'm not a car DIYer by nature. Looks like a bunch of bolts in exchange for a better view of what you're doing. I've got the time next weekend, and the price is right.

Thanks for your detailed instructions, windstrings.

I just replaced the left headlight bulb on my 2007. No problem. It took about 30 minutes, working carefully. I definitely recommend a flashlight and a mirror-on-a-stick -- they really help.

I bought the bulb from eAutoWorks. It's supposed to be a direct replacement for the factory Philips bulb (4300K I think) but it looks more blue to me. Not bad, and okay for the $80 price.

The local dealer wanted $150 for the bulb and $120 to install it. And it wasn't covered under warranty because my car has 38,000 miles on it.

    Regards,
    Chris

They will look a tad more blue when you first fire them up for sure.. after they warm up, they drop kelvin a bit.

I think stock may be 4200K.... so these would be a tad higher but barely noticeable.

I didn't think about the mirror on a stick idea when I did mine... I bet that really helps.... even sticking a camera with a flash in there and looking at the pic.... just getting a visual of what the spring mechanism looks like helps immensity......
