PriusChat received early access to the 2010 Prius brake ECU software update yesterday and we have some information and video to share from the experience. The most important thing to state is that the upgrade is simple and easy. If you have ever upgraded the firmware on any piece of electronics, the process is very similar. The process was so easy, in fact, that I was able to create a video about it and keep it under a minute.
    Here are the simple steps:
    1. The Toyota Technician will plug the Techstream computer into the ODBII connector on your Prius
    2. The computer will do a "Health Check" to make sure the Prius checks out OK
    3. The tech will initiate a process to upload the updated brake ECU software to the 2010 Prius
    4. A final "Status List" will be created showing system statuses and whether your Prius needs any Service Campaigns. It won't since you just applied the update.
Notes: Before the update, your Brake ECU software version will most likely be F152647103 (or something similar), and after the update it will be F152647106. The official name for the update is SSC-A0B. Special thanks to Scott Clark Toyota and my tech Mike Allen for working me in for the update. Want to share your experiences? Check out the 2010 Prius Recall Software Update Experiences thread and let us know how it went.

This proves a prius can be hacked.

ps I feel the music is a little overkill

I agree about the music. Watching software update can't be made "Rock and Roll". I'm for no soundtrack or given Toyota's troubles recently, if you must, I suggest the music used in Benny Hill Episodes.

I also find it mildly interesting that the RECALL update is refered to as SSC-AOB. That suggests to me Special Service Campaign-Adjustment of Brakes. Which further suggests to me that Toyota must of wanted to execute this as a Special Service Campaign as opposed to a Voluntary Recall...otherwise it would be VR-AOB. I wonder at what point Toyota decided that a full fledged recall was needed.

    I am speculating I admit.

It was either music or dead air. We were not allowed to use the audio from the shop.

    Danny,
    Thanks so much for this.
I get so irritated when I hear the media report the problem as being "Brake failure" or "loss of braking", etc. And even though media may mention a required software update during a piece, it's easy for an average person to believe it's a Prius brake system failure or faulty parts.

This video puts it in perspective.

And to satisfy the music critics on Board - Perhaps this one would work>>>

They updated mine yesterday when I brought it in for the free 1 month check, quick and easy. Though I never noticed any "issues" in the first place. Great customer service though. :)

    That was easy.

I wonder if TechStream Lite with Mongoose MFC ($500) can be used to update this. This would open up a new way to hack.

Someone in another thread posted a copy of his RO on his Fusion hybrid. On Ford's own paperwork it was called a Recall in several different places....but it wasn't a recall, it was a Customer Service Campaign. Go figure.

Yeah, I think that has to do with my car having the Advanced Technology Package and his having a different package. When they configure the computer before the update, they have to input if it has DRCC and some other things... That we think is what affects the Calibration ID number... I made a note of that in this thread under the description for that pic: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...prius-recall-software-update-experiences.html

Called my local dealer (not where I bought the car) on Monday to get the update. Was told that they did not have the "equipment", and that it may be a few weeks before the fix was available. After seeing reports of repairs here on PriusChat, I called again, was told no one was answering the phone in the service department, and was asked to leave my name for a call back.

Decided to call the dealership where I bought the car (about 80 miles away) and was told to come on in. Even though there were about eight people ahead of me, they were done in under an hour, and they washed the car.

Kudos to Mt. Pleasant Toyota (Texas) for taking care of me again.

I am back from getting the software update. I was in and out of the service center in less than 30 minutes. I "tested" it on an icy, snow-covered alley and the brakes (including ABS) worked just fine. Post software update: The regen brakes feel a bit firmer and more responsive--the only difference (subtle) that I noticed.

Looks like this upgrade is a non-event. About as fascinating as watching paint dry. All the media hysteria for this?

    Thanks for the report.

As of right now there is no recall or software update for Gen II owners. If that changes I'll certainly update everyone.

Doug just posted something in the other thread, an update that includes references to the NHW20. He also included some excellent advice about how to report a problem correctly. IMHO, excellent advice by itself! ... Signature quality!!
Toyota's participation here is well above and beyond anything I've seen before and quite impressive.

We've learned via reading the SSC sheet that the difference is between 15" and 17" OEM equipped cars (having different power steering motors, etc.). The ECU controls TRAC/VSC/ABS and braking.
