How many years before scheduled TV and radio programs are finally dumped into the trashbin of history for good? On Demand programming seems to be an accelerating juggernaut - and why not: who wants to be a slave to the clock just to catch some favorite program?

The end of scheduled programming will permit productions to take whatever time is appropriate; gone will be editing by the guillotine of a stopwatch. To be sure, overall length will still be a criteria, but in the manner of motion pictures, trimmed to match content, not the rigid confines of a thirty minute box.

And, of course, selection will increase. No longer bound by what can be neatly packed into every 24 hour cycle, a production company need not sacrifice two of three winners simply because there's no time left on the studio clock.

Time and again I've been frustrated by countless programs that couldn't pursue or explain important points simply because the Timex meter was running out. With On Demand, perhaps some of these programs will unbutton their straitjackets, take a deep breath, and really give a subject its due.

    I can hardly wait.

I can see us moving that direction, but we're not there yet. Many people 'time shift' by recording a program and watching it later, or by watching it online when they want. (Maybe soon we won't even need televisions.) The lack of scheduling is a huge convenience, though broadcasters will need to find replacement revenue streams for the commercials we try to skip as much as possible. And there will always be some programs, like sporting events, that people will prefer to watch live.

My son would have died had he not found a friend to "visit" during the super-bowl. We don't do any live feed TV here so for those things he has to mooch off of a friend.

We did without live TV for years. We did more reading, but I got addicted to the internet instead of tv. It's more interactive, but still sedentary.

You need to learn how to "dancesurf". ;)

All you need is music, wireless connection and a counter high place to set your macbook.

With the exception of a few years when I lived in a furnished apartment in Mexico, I have not had a TV since I left my mother's home as a teenager. I've listened to radio and read books. Now I get my radio programs by podcast. The computer downloads my favorite programs automatically, and from time to time I download all the latest ones onto my iPod, and listen to them when convenient. Apparently now there are shows that are not broadcast at all, but only distributed as podcasts. Bandwidth makes it a little harder to do that with TV, but as bandwidth becomes cheaper it will probably become common. Also, TV is more expensive to produce than radio, so finding funding may be more of a challenge as well.

I have not had live TV since it switched to Digital, did not bother to get converter for 20 year old TV and do not miss it at all.
Didn't watch much TV before that so it was not a big loss.

Much easier to get news from the internet. View what I want, when I want it. Never watch the local news, nothing but murders and car wreaks (and commercials). Found that the very few TV shows that I do want to watch are avaiable online and are only 40 minutes without commercials, not an hour.

Grew up in Indianapolis, so Sunday afternoons for the last month have been a slight issue, but was invited to a couple parties for the playoffs and Super Bowl (or not so Super for a Colts fan!).

I get teased enough about my music as it is. That's all I need, to start dancing around the house in my tights.

I suppose I could duct tape the macbook to the handlebars when I'm riding my bike on the rollers, but I don't think I could steer and type at the same time. :juggle:
