After several months of researching audio equipment to upgrade my JBL system, I finally completed the upgrade. My new system sounds amazing; the package I put together works great in the Prius. The sound is so life like that it makes the JBL system sound like a transistor radio.

    Audio equipment installed:
    - HU - Eclipse CD5030
    - AMP- Alpine PDX-4.100
    - Speakers - Polk MM6501 Components (front & rear)
    - Sub - Infinity Basslinkl
    - RCA's - Monster cables
    - Dynamat Extreme around the speakers.

Nice setup !! and thank you sharing.

But I don't understand that why you bought a III and pulled the JBL system off?

Good question - I wanted the white blizzard and the III was only available. When I sell I will get a higher $$ for the III than II.

Nice job. I'm doing a similar upgrade, and am considering the momo's and the basslink. I hope you don't mind a lot of questions.

How hard was it to install the speakers? Did you buy any accessories to make installation easier? It looks like you put dynamat around the speaker in the front door, do you have any rattles in the rest of the door when you turn it up?

Does the basslink give you all the low end that you are missing? How does the system sound when you have the subwoofer off?

My thoughts are polk mm6501s up front, with the tweeters in the stock location, driven off of an amp. db651s in the rear doors for fill driven from the head unit. Basslink in the back with quick disconnect so I can remove it when I need the space.

I am also considering a slim 12" subwoofer that can be put in the tray over the spare. I may go with hertz hsk165 xl components because they have a lower crossover for the tweeter and better midrange sound. I wish I could listen to your system so I could hear and decide if I need to spend the extra money.

I am thinking of doing all the work myself except for the front components and dynamat. Please let me know how hard that part of the installation was.

After researching HUs, Speakers, Amps for several months I decided on this system. I went to various audio stores and listened to different HUs, speakers (Focal, Hertz & others), Amps and decided on:
    - Eclipse because of the 5V pre outputs which gives you great clean sound.
    - Polk MM6501 components for front & rear. These speakers sound amazing, clear and precise. I think they sound better than the $400 Focal & Hertz and they cost less.
    - Alpine PDX-4.100 Amp because it's a class D amp and it's very efficient.
    - Basslink because it has great bass and it's removable.

All the speakers (front & rear) have Dynamat Extreme around the speaker holes and behind each speaker. You have to get the speaker adapters & wire harness (front & rear) form Crutchfield or Metra, Scosche, Sonic Electronics. No rattles from the speakers at all.

    - I put the Amp under the passenger seat (amp size 10x8x2.5) very small and powerful.

The placement of the front tweeters is critical. I played around with this and where you see my front tweeters has the best sound. If you place the tweeters up front in the dash, it is too far from your 6.5 woofers in the bottom of front doors. The sound is not right.
I have components in the rear doors in the factory location, 6.5 woofers in the bottom of the doors and the tweeters up top where the factory squakers were.

Also make sure you use gook RCA cables and power cables. I used Monster RCA's. No noise at all.

I would spend the extra $$ for the components in the rear, it gives great all-around sound.

It was worth every cent. :D

Any other questions let me know.

Nice unit. I'm a little jealous of the paramic eq and time alinement.

Ok. Put one on order. Hopefully I'll get my head unit, camera, and sub all installed this weekend. Where did you end up putting it.

Thanks. I see the scosche toy69 in the front and scosche for 6.5 or 5.25 universal adapter in the back from the crutchfield site. Are these the ones you used? How long did it take to put in the speakers in?

I have the non-JBL system, so no tweeter holes in the rear. I think as fill it would do fine.

Thank you so much for your help.

Thanks for the info! Looks like the Scorche, or whatever, 6x9 -> 6" adapter fits well. Did you drill out the rivets and then use bolts? Where are you keeping your subwoofer?

    Thanks!

The sub is in the hatch behind the passenger's back seat. I have it tied with bungee-cords to the buckle. I did this so I can remove the sub when I need to.

Love the Eclipse HU - 5 volt pre-out give amazing clear signal.
UBS is part of the HU.
    Bluetooth built into Eclipse HU.
I also have XM hooked to HU.

BTW, how did you connect the steering wheel controls to Eclipse?
I'm thinking of the same HU...

It's not just the high voltage but the low resistance. 5v and 55ohm impedance is nice! :)

I always loved the way the Eclipse models sound but they were always 2yrs behind Kenwood, Pioneer, or Alpine in features. :(

I did not connect to my steering wheel controls, I use te remote that came with the Eclipse HU and it works great. Metra just released ASWC steering wheel control interface that will be very easy to install.

You will love the Eclipse HU. :D

Re: Complete Audio Upgrade - New FULL Install

Hi AJC. My install is Saturday. MM6501s in the front and rear doors. JL Audio HD400 100 wpc into 4 ohms, Axxess steering wheel controls, all Metra harnesses including the one that allows no splicing for the Axxess ASWC as well as power harness, Scosche speaker brackets (F&R),Eclipse CD3200 (new!), (not as featured as the 5030 but should work fine) Eclipse Changer 3083, HDR109 HD radio tuner and USB along with Basslink vertically mounted in the same location as yours. 4G wire from the battery to the dx block and ground, 8G power to the Basslink etc. from dx block. Extreme dynamat the entire doors front and rear along with behind speaker. Going to run Stinger/Streewires hyperflex 14 gauge wire to all speakers. Stinger HPM3 17 ft rca to Basslink and HPM3 12 ft rcas to amplifier under passenger seat. Stinger 80 Amp circuit breaker close to the battery in rear. Did I miss anything?!?!?!?

Don't worry about it IMO. I have not seen anyone use more powerful amps than the ones I installed and I have had zero issues. I was using a Diamond Audio D6 1500.1 (1500w x 1 RMS @ 1Ohm but had been bench tested to put out over 1,800w RMS) and a Diamond Audio D9 800.2 (200w x 2 RMS @ 4ohm) If you do go with a high powered setup then I would recommend installing an Optima yellow-top deep cycle battery. It doesn't take long to drain the stock battery and after you do that a few times the battery will be shot.

Because the car uses a 100 amp fusible link, I'm not really sure that you can supply the required amperage to a very high-powered system for long periods and depending on the quality of your amp you could prematurely ruin the amplifier. I fried my D6 1500.1 last year but I believe this was due to a lack of proper ventilation. I replaced the amp with a 500w x 1 (KS500.1) unit from ARC Audio and am very happy with its performance and size.
