I couldn't believe it - 56MPG!

A warm Prius is a happy Prius.

 

Welcome aboard, under the right conditions, 70mpg plus is attainable.

 

We got our Prius at the end of December and we are also delighted by the mileage. As many have discovered, the actual MPG calculation (miles on odometer/gallons consumed) is slightly less than the dash display. You might want to look at discussions on this topic, in which many claim that the actual mileage is 5% to 8% less than displayed. Enjoy your Prius; regardless of this difference, your car gets outstanding mileage.

 

I have to believe hilly terrain is an advantage - I see some of the best mileage in the hills... Anyone else?

For the two trips where I've noted pump was close to 95% of displayed. So I'm looking forward to getting a 52.7mpg tank.

 

I haven't had experience with hilly terrain, although, like the stats claim, stop and go city driving really does give better mileage than steady-speed freeway. Fortunately this appears to have been unaffected by the brake reflash.

 

Well, I haven't been up to the real hills, but on undulating hills on 202 and 27, which are mostly 45-55mph the mileage is a bit better than cruising at 65 on I95 (which undulates but not quite as much).

 

It really is great isn't it! The best I got was 58 mpg over my 18 mile commute in to work. It was an unseasonably warm day.

I got 54 on the same commute in to work the other day in a bad snow storm with everything on wipers, lights, defrosters (intermittent use) and the fan on. Granted, I was driving slower than usual as the weather was really bad, but I was expecting less due to the conditions.

Also, this car handled really well in the snow. I was pleasantly surprised. The route is hilly and I had one of the best commutes in really bad weather that I have ever had. :cheer2:

 

You are lucky. I have had my 2010 since September and currently am only getting 39mpg in the city. I have not had the experience of taking it on a road trip, but....this is rather disappointing in city mpg!!!!!

 

I'll bet it's the combination of hills and speeds in the 45-55mph range - the uphills allow you to pulse in an efficient range, and the downhills allow warp stealth or something close to it. On flats (in that mph range), you have a lot of fluctuation in speed and have to pulse too often with much shorter glides.

 

You should be getting better than that in warm Houston, unless you drive 0.5 miles per trip or something. What is you tire pressure? Tell us about you driving pattern, traffic, etc.

 

Every time I read a complaint like the one you responded to, I think of my wife. Five years into Prius ownership, *hours* of discussion about fuel economy, and an open mind and willingness and desire for high mpg, she fails. She just cannot grasp anticipatory driving.

 

Yeah. I must say my SO is doing great learning from the Prius. That said, when I brake gently from 65 to 55 mph 3/4 mile from a light with stopped cars, she says "What's wrong?" I respond "red light" and glide down to 35 mph, making the light on green right behind the cars that had been stopped. Just a few more seconds at 65 and I would have been at a stop myself.
