I read that after the brake recall fix the ABS light no longer comes on when it functions properly reacting to tire slippage. Toyota Customer Service confirmed that and said it was because some customers complained about seeing the ABS light on when experiencing the brake problem. So Toyota set the light not to perform when there was slippage even though the ABS was working properly. For further explanation they directed me to my Toyota Dealer.

[I was confussed at this point mixing up the ABS Light with the Slip Indicator Light...]

    [Removed part about dealer...]

When the ABS is active and responding to slippage I want to see the light coming on and off too. I want to know it is responding to the road situation. I thought that was the purpose of the light--not just that the car was skidding straight rather then attempting a 360 in the middle of the road.

Is there any way this light function can be turned back on? From what Toyota Customer Service said the ABS light does not relate to the braking problem fix itself--that the light was just an additional thing done at the same time. What the Service Manager said was that he would look into it.

[I think much of this thread constitues a 'short between my headset' over mixed up indicator lights.]

Most cars don't have the abs light come on when abs is engaged. You should be able to feel a vibration in the brake pedal when abs is active. As long as you are not losing control, the vibration should be the only feedback that you need. The convention in other cars is for ABS lights to come on during abs problems. The VSC and TRAC lights should come on if they are active.

The lights are only software, but as I understand it there is no customization. Look at how hard it has been for some people to turn off the back up beep, and that customization is in the manual.

I'm not saying that your concerns aren't valid. They are. But there are reasons for the lights to be acting the way they are now.

I hate to be brutal. If you can't feel the function of the ABS, a light isn't going to help other than anything for you to look at

I just looked through the manual again to make more sense out of this and on pages 246-248 it describes a number of systems working automatically--including the ABS. It isn't the ABS light that I'm aware of coming on...it is what is refered to as the Slip Indicator Light.

Clarifying this thread then... After the brake recall software update does the Slip Indicator Light still come on when a skid condition is detected? I apologize for thinking this was the ABS light. That light only comes on momentarily when the car is started indicating its brief system test.

As far as that goes my recollection of what the brake pedal felt like when the Slip Indicator Light was on for only a second is vague. Maybe, even though the car was slipping for a short moment the conditions were such that the ABS was not needed so there was no induced vibration in the brake pedal?

So, now I can see why drivers who experienced this braking difficulty and noticing the ABS light on (not the Slip Indicator Light) were nervous about it. Was it an actual ABS system malfunction though or just erroneous?
