The Gen II Prius does not have a brake-throttle override capability. If you press both the brake and the throttle at the same time, the engine wants to accelerate. With a brake-throttle override, in the same circumstance, the engine would go into idle (or shut down in the Prius) and the brakes would be the function that is operational. Definitely NOT a safety feature to omit the brake-throttle override. But a margin increase? ABSOLUTELY!

What gets me angry is how Toyota is blithely ignoring the non-current production cars. It is as if they don't matter; they are yesterday's news.

But you are not facing a potential criminal indictment. Short of taking the 5th, amnesia is the best defense.

Where the F are you getting your "information" from?? Almost every
driver on this board can tell you that's a flat-out false statement.
Reasonable brake application in a Prius [e.g. pressure one would apply
with the expectation of stopping the car] forces motive demand to zero.
That's been clearly shown by numerous outside references and mentioned
I don't know how many times in this and other forums.
    .
We don't know anything about Gilbert's so-called work other than "I
screwed around with the wiring", because his written and in-person
testimony never gives any specifics. Until we see specifics, for the
trial scenarios for both Toyota and other vehicles, it's dismissed.
I *am* willing to believe such claims if they're backed up by facts
and a solid perspective on real-life scenarios, which is not what
    I've seen so far.

I'm starting to doubt you even own a Prius because that statement is completely false.

I've experimented with this myself and here is a video to prove to others that the brake does indeed override the throttle.

I think you absorbed some of the FUD that Malorn was trying to spread.

Preliminarily, please pardon my asking a question whose answer is likely out there in other posts. I've not yet found anything conclusive in reviewing prior the posts I've been able to locate via search.

First question --I realize there's not going to be a recall on pre-2010 prius's for the brake override. However, I've been confused as to whether "something" such as a "reflash" might be offered under a TSB.

Are things at the point where we know that's a fact, likely, unlikely, or not even a possibility for the pre-2010 Prius? And, if available, what Prius model years might it apply to?

A second question, if I step reasonably hard on both the accelerator and the brake on my 2009, should I expect (1) the brakes to win out, or (2) even better, the accelerator ignore my stepping on the accelerator pedal once the brake is on?

Thanks for any guidance in the midst of all this Toyota / Congressional double-talk [or is that word too kind ... ]. Every time I think I understand it, it turns out I don't.

    Thanks,
    Rick

    Rick,

The video above is based on a GenII Prius. They all react in the same way. I drive a 2005 and if I hold the accelerator pedal to the floor then step on the brake the car will slow down. If I press hard on the brake then the accelerator pedal becomes unresponsive much like in the video and the car slows down very fast. :)

Thanks! From watching the video, I wasn't sure whether the accelerator stopped "trying", or whether it was just the brakes winning out. For certain, when the brakes were released, it surged ahead pretty robustly ....

I know I should just have gone out and test it on mine ... but I face the curse of "newness" -- mine is a 2009, and I'm still being overcareful I guess. But that'll go away like it always does.

I strongly suggest you try it anyway. It's always good to know exactly how your personal car will react. Never take anything you read on the internet as gospel. :) You won't hurt anything. lol

ANY "failsafe" system can be artificially induced to fail. Toyota only claims their system is failsafe within reasonable parameters of real life scenarios. If Dr. Gilbert's method of inducing failure is shown to represent a realistic scenario then maybe he has something. But his methods and results need peer review and further study before being presented as valid.

I just tried this 15 minutes ago to confirm an earlier test that I did to check the brake-accelerator override. The brake pedal on my 2007 Touring edition does not override the accelerator pedal. I will be bringing the car into the dealer for a check. But at this point, there is no brake-throttle override on my car.

I would have expected Toyota to have already done an internal review of Dr. Gilbert's method. Either they really are tone deaf or there could be something to Dr. Gilbert's claim. If Toyota has not done a review of Dr. Gilbert's method, they are stoopid, which IMO is the equivalent of tone deaf.

    Here's some perspective:

Toyota Congressional Hearing Theater - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

    An excerpt:

    (bold emphasis added)

I suggest reading the whole article though, I left out the parts about who's paid by who (which goes both ways, as usual).

So, do you mean that Toyota ETCS-i system didn't have an error code for an error condition in their system is/are the fault of Ford, GM, the USA government and the victims of the sudden acceleration? I don't get it!

Huh? How did you get any of that from what I simply quoted out of the hearings?

When I was a computer programmer, I spend most of my time to artificially induce failure to the system. This is what we call testing. If my boss can induce a failure that I didn't induced, I would be in small trouble. If our client can induce a failure that we didn't induced, we are in big trouble.

I don't know if Toyota do thing differently now a day.
