My Prius just crossed the 4500 mile mark. When I start the car, I now get a message saying that maintenance should be done soon. Does this message simply come on when the odometer reaches a certain point, or does it mean that I ought to get the maintenance done right away?

It's a reminder that comes on every 5,000 miles.

Maintenance Required after only 4,500 miles. I'm sorry Craig but you got a lemon. If you need maintenance after only 4,500 miles it's only going to get worse. I would tell you to take it to the dealer but they won't give you any money for it. If you want, you can bring it to Chicago and I'll buy it off you for a generous $15,000. Seriously, you're not going to get a better offer.

Let me know when you'll be here.

It means your car is ruined and you should quit claim it to me immediately for disposal. Either that, or rotate your tires, consider whether you want to change oil at 5K or 10K, reset the warning, and continue driving at your own risk.

Yes, it is merely based on the odometer. And it will become more insistent at 5000 miles, staying on until you switch to another screen.

I had my first change done early, just before embarking on a very long vacation. The shop forgot to reset the counter, so I spent most of the vacation annoyed by the more insistent warning.

Don't you know you can reset it yourself?

How do I reset the warning? I'm responsible enough that I trust myself to take the car in at the 5000 mile mark.

    Aw geez.
Tom answered the question in the very first reply so we're just having some fun.

    Alright, here's the formal answer.
Craig, the Maintenance Required light flashes starting at 4,500 miles after it was last reset. At 5,000 miles, it stays on steady as you drive. This is a reminder that you need to change the oil. There's nothing more to it than that.

I can't even find where the "Maintenance Required" indicator is mentioned in the 2010 manual though I did find that to reset the 5,000-mile counter, refer to page 428.

What, my answer was correct? I was just making up something to mess with the OP.

That was posted three weeks too late. And web access was very sparse during this month-long vacation. And I left the full size manual at home.

If I reset this way, will the statistics on "Trip A" reset to 0? Thanks.

Trip A and Trip B are reset by holding Trip button on steering wheel down a couple of seconds. Suggest you use one or the other for tank fuel economy, and the other one to play with seeing what conditions give what results.

It shouldn't. But at least one shop will reset TripA and TripB as a free added service.
