    I know that if I drive 60 mph in my prius, I am greener than driving at 75 mph because I generate less CO2. But at the same time, there will be a lot more SUV and Truck driver drive right up to my tail, change lane and accelerate pass me @ 20mpg. Am I greener driving @ 75 mph?

    It's like asking: "will I burn less calories running a 10-minute mile than a 12-minute mile over an hour?" ;)

    Are you asking if the gas saved by the gashogs not slowing and then accelerating back up to speed to pass you (at 60) will more than compensate for the additional gas your car will use (at 75)? My guess would be yes, but it's hard to quantify the savings as there are a lot of variables to deal with.

    Is this a serious question? 75 mph is not greener than 60 mph.

    If you want them to drive greener, you should do what cops do. Swerve back and forth in front of them across all lanes on the highway at 60 mph and see what happens :D

    Focus on what you can control. If somebody cannot look ahead and move left in time to avoid sniffing your tailpipe that is their problem.

    I assume you mean on a 70mph highway. There is no one answer covering all the tailgating/speeding vehicle types and driver dispositions. If you can't be greener, then at least be safer by doing 75. The clumps of traffic caused by people trying to get around someone moving slower than the flow cause a lot of collisions.

    The clumps are caused by people exceeding the speed limit, or if not that, by not paying attention to their driving.

    You can't control what they do, you can only control what you do. It would be hard to quantify this question regardless. Drive in the right lane at 60 mph and don't worry about it.

    I think it won't matter that much. But Best bet is to concentrate on your own driving and what speed you are comfortable with.

    First of all, most of those SUV's are not getting 20 mpg at 70mph, they are getting 15 mpg if they are lucky.

    Sometimes I pass SUV's and they get their egos in a wad and must pass me back at far below 20 mpg. So I guess I'm not very good for the environment. :madgrin:

    I don't know about greener but i'm sure you will live alot longer since almost nobody will run you over when you're driving 75mph. :)

    Find a semi-trailer truck running at 65 mph and use them as your pace car. You'll get great mileage and the other drivers will see the truck and drive around it and you without a second thought. You'll find driving is a lot less stressful. Get an iPod/iPhone and enjoy your own, quality programming.

    I'm gonna put a stick in the hornets nest here;

    Are the environmental savings of our Priuss (Prii) offset by us using this forum? Just think of all the servers buzzing away in a room somewhere, all those laptops drawing power? All those cups of tea (or coffee for our colonial friends) made whilst we sit and surf the forums.

    I like the idea of drafting but I don't want stone chips.

    If you get to your destination sooner driving at 75mph, your engine doesn't run as long. What are the calculations for that?
