My gf has been given a Chevy Aveo as a courtesy car whilst her Honda is being repaired following an incident at traffic lights where the car in front banged it in reverse and hit her!

I know the Aveo is an economy car but boy is it built to a price. It's absolutely horrid. Who would actually choose one of these? I wouldn't pay half the asking price. I guess its one of those cars that you just know has been made to the lowest tender.

I suppose it's nice to drive an alternative car once in a while to make you appreciate your own.

Anyone else had the 'joy' of driving a Chevy Aveo?

Yes and for the same reasons, I had to use it as a 'free' rental. It was really a piece of junk. I think I rented in 2008. The lightweight 4cyl car actually got the same mpg as my much heavier 6cyl Mustang on the highway. I was disappointed. I also felt unsafe in that car, the doors felt like feathers and the roof structure seems totally lacking. The only positive thing..... It seemed to have good performance both accelerating and braking. When my Mustang was repaired i was so happy to be back in it and out of that Aveo.

While on this forum this is not considered a plus.... GM does not make only bad cars like this one. I also drove the Malibu in 2009 and found it to be a great car. Oh yes... the real world highway mpg of the Malibu was almost the same as the much smaller Aveo!

The Aveo is a shitbox. The Malibu is a great car.

Well in its defence the UK version has a 1200cc engine whereas your US spec has a 1600cc engine. The UK one is slow but quite economical (according to my gf who drives a little slower than me :) ) but it is still built the same and I agree with your findings about the doors and roof.

Can't believe it is a new car from the 21st century. 1985 maybe, but 2010? nah

When I was shopping for the next car a few years ago, I went to the Hertz (rental car) sales lot. Not because I wanted to buy a rental, but because they have a large selection of different models and the first step in the process is to eliminate the cars that do not have enough headroom for me.

We were about to leave the lot after looking at several cars and my GF noticed that we had not looked at the Chevy Aveo(s). The salesman said: "No, don't bother - I wouldn't want to sell you one of those, we will end up auctioning them all because we don't want to sell you something that unreliable." He said that virtually every one that he saw had problems with the window regulators and that they "just aren't a very good car."

FWIW, the Aveo is one of the slowest accelerating cars tested by Consumer Reports. See Best & worst cars review, best & worst acceleration.

Regarding its fuel economy, yep, it's also one of the worst for a subcompact in their tests Best & worst cars review, fuel-efficient vehicles and heh, one can see the mileage they got w/the was almost identical to the Malibu.

Never driven...but also have NEVER heard anything positive about it. Why does Cheverolet stay with a product, unchanged when nothing is positive about it?

When every review of a vehicle is negative and the best being said about it is that it's as almost as cheap to purchase as it is cheaply built? Why Bother?

I had one as a rental car while my Prius was getting bodywork done. It was easily the worst car I have ever driven. I would have been stuck with it a week, but luckily the check-engine light came on and I complained...wound up with a not-so-bad Nissan Versa. The last visit they gave me a Hyundai Sonata that was VERY nice.

Also the Aveo has made it on the least satisfying list (from owner surveys) at Japanese Cars Still Dominate Consumer Reports' Car-Owner Satisfaction Survey: Consumer Reports http://pressroom.consumerreports.org/pressroom/.

Back when CNW published that "Dust to Dust" drivel, moron/shill Art Spinella and other ignoramus writers that latched on claimed that the Aveo's gas mileage (which was ever poorer back when) made statements that the Aveo's mileage was the "same" as the Prius or that ir was "within spitting distance". Right... ~25 mpg combined mileage in CR's tests == 44 mpg on CR's tests for the Prius of the time.

I know city cars (sub compacts?) are new and few and far between in the States. Here in Europe we have many and some, such as the Ford Fiesta are pretty good for their size. I believe you're getting the Fiesta in the US soon.

The Aveo is obviously a compromise from a company that wanted to make a city car but didn't really know how. Perhaps its a way of putting people off them? I remember Jeremy Clarkson did a report on the Rover 200 in the UK and said it was driven by people who hated driving and that by driving the Rover 200 (which was so horrid), it confirmed all their negative thoughts.

    Perhaps the Aveo is based on this? Make it so terrible that the public think it reflects ALL city cars and as such all city cars are best avoided. They're not. Check out the following;

Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio, Fiat Punto, Nissan Micra, VW Polo, Vauxhall/Opel Corsa, Fiat 500 etc etc

Some people can evidently spit farther than others. That's world class spittin' distance...

Hmmm. Maybe its the way its geared. It seemed pretty fast but most of my driving was city. Maybe they made it do 0-30 pretty fast. 2531lbs 103hp are not bad #'s for a cheap car. But again.... the car is a piece of junk! Next time if that is the free car, I will PAY to upgrade and not drive it.

It's actually a Daewoo made in Korea. GM is going to upgrade the model and actually try to make it a decent car. I've seen pictures from the car show, but haven't seen it up close. Someone at work has one for a few years and it is pretty bad. Part of GM's problems.

I saw the next one last fall, nice car, the current Aveo is a tin box that gets bad mileage for a tin box on wheels.

No but apparently a lotta folks like to use it as a comparison to the Prius (omg, you can buy two Aveos for the price of a Prius!).

The cheapest (by price) GM car that I've driven is a Cobalt. I've also ridden in a Cavalier. The Cobalt is miles better than the Cav (which frankly was crap). I wonder how much better the Cruze will be compared to the Cobalt. I hope it uses stronger plastic (our rental Cobalt had a broken driver's door armrest)

The Cruze is dynamite. Should be a very strong entry for GM in the compact arena......finally.
