Why is it when I push the button on the drivers door to lock up my car it just gives one loud, long beep without locking the doors?

A key is still in the car, or one of the doors is open.

Or the car is still in Ready mode; i.e. not shut off.

The long beep is the Prius' way of telling you it won't allow you to lock the doors due to some adverse condition. The common non-locking conditions are listed above. There may be more, but I haven't experienced any others.

Is it still not locked? Could it be that the second key is still in the car?

All of the above-listed are good reasons why the car will refuse to lock. Also, make sure that the hatch is fully closed - open it, then slam it shut.

I have had the long beep once or twice when nothing appeared to be wrong. Pressing the button again has worked to lock the doors.

I think that the reason may have been that the key fob was shielded by my body position w/r/t the SKS antenna. I have had a similar issue when unlocking the rear hatch; the hatch won't open until I shift my position so that the fob is not obstructed by my body.

My key fob battery is possibility getting weak; it is now 3 yrs old.

Dogfriend, I think you're right. The keys were in my pocketbook and I dont think it was close enough to the door. I haven't had the problem repeat itself today. I'll pay closer attention to getting fob closer to door when trying to lock and if I have any more problems I'll look into it further. Thanks guys!

A cell phone in the same pocket or purse can also interfere with SKS fob operation.

This frequently happens to me if I try to press the door button instantly after closing the door and if I am still very close to the car [in a close parking lot space for example]. It's like it isn't quite sure if I'm out of the car.

But having once locked myself out of a non-toyota rental whose 'computer logic' was to remember I pushed the lock button many minutes previously [beeping an error condition at the time], only to go ahead and lock all four [along with my keys] when I did correct the slightly open rear door error -- I'd rather it be wrong on the safe side like the Prius...

I agree with your last statement. My wife keeps the second fob in her pocketbook, though she rarely drives the Prius. More than once, we have gotten out and I have tried to lock the car only to get the beep. While trying to figure out what is wrong, I will see the Key Detected in Vehicle, ask my wife where her pocketbook is, and she grumbles as she opens her door and removes her pocketbook !!

So far the car has been smarter than we are !!

I think this is the problem. I'm trying to jump and run too fast. I dont have a lot of patience to wait for the car to realize I'm actually OUT! LOL! :D
