This Philadelphia locksmith made me a new transponder-head key for my `06 Honda Civic for $90. The dealer wanted $180. No one else in the region was able to beat the dealer's price by enough to be worthwhile. He did have to special order the blank key. Apparently for any make, there may be several identical looking means-of-entry devices that have different transponders:

So is it not possible to program a 2009 SKS fob for a 2005 that utilizes the SKS system?

It's not possible to reprogram a used SKS keyfob. Once it has been initialized to one car, the remote functions cannot be made to work on a different car. The transponder (keyfob in dash) function works fine. A new keyfob can be used on any year (2004-2009) car.

You're still in Sunnyvale?...A 'hybrid' shop in Berkeley claims they can reprogram used fobs for $135...Beats some of the estimates I've gotten at the dealership and for a $40 fob I got off ebay, seems to be the cheaper way to go...Just seems that there is conflicting info on this.

I've read people having it reprogrammed and yet it doesn't appear to be definitive

Good catch! That's got to be Paul at Art's Automotive. He tried to reprogram a used keyfob for me several years ago and failed. Looks like he's learned more about the system. Like more than anybody else outside of the designers of SKS.

According to his article in MasterTech Magazine, the keyfob has the vehicle ID burned into it when it is first paired with a car. Standard procedures are not capable of changing the data in the keyfob. But there is a "little known procedure" for reprogramming a used SKS keyfob. And he'll use it on your keyfob for $135. Somebody needs to get him drunk & talkative...:D
