    Re: Run Away Prius

Okay, serious tinfoil hat time: The CHP set the whole thing up,
because they're pissed off at some contrived "unsatisfactory"
response on the Santee crash and multiple suggestions that one
of their own might have been an incompetent driver.
    .
A complete background check on the driver of the Prius is the
first order of business here, including all present and prior
    affiliations.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was staged by the LA Times with assistance from ABC News. This sounds like something one or both would do.

We did it only to make you show up.....

Now that YOU mention it yes I can see where the CHP is very likely in on this. They now see Toyota beginning to flex some muscle to push back. So the CHP 'plants' a bag of heroin so to speak. Well we'll see soon enough. :)

I can't believe all the bad luck that seems to befall everyone else. I do certainly enjoy living under bright sunshine with none of these worries and woes that everyone else seems to encounter.

Don't you think the CHP would be part of the scam? After all, CHP officers responded.

    Re: Run Away Prius

:) Next post. I do think that the CHP and LAT are in cahoots about the level of noise that is being generated in Calif. I can understand that the CHP might be angry because they think that one of there's was killed by a defective Toyota/Lexus.

When the resolution of the Saylor accident came down that it was simply a tragic accident I can understand that the CHP might be upset, so they're making it difficult for Toyota . The really loud noise from the LAT began after the final crash evaluation was published. They didn't want to let Toyota off the hook too easily.

In my personal opinion being 3000 miles away it's the goading of the CHP with the LAT as its voice along with certain powerful Cali politicians that are driving this witchhunt. I can see where these two powerful California forces and their political arm might be coordinating a campaign.

    Ok,

It is time to "RUN AWAY:"

<AHEM>We are now entering the 'silly season.' You know, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

The incident happened; it was dealt with; initial reports were inaccurate; the facts and data are coming out. The CHP used his loudspeaker to tell the driver what to do ...

The vehicle will be throughly analyzed (no doubt there are rival teams of engineers trying to decide who gets it first.) I really don't care since eventually we'll get to read all of the reports ... G'night.

Your list is still too short. Here's another:

Its a setup by a serial plaintiff to be a lead plaintiff in one of the many upcoming class action lawsuits against Toyota!

That isn't enough tinfoil hats yet. What else are we missing?

Toyota Prius Speeds Out of Control on SoCal FWY

    By Ben Tracy
(CBS) On the very day Toyota was making a high-profile defense of its cars, one of them was speeding out of control.
It was a pretty frightening Monday afternoon for a driver in San Diego. The California Highway Patrol said the driver of a Toyota Prius called 911 around 1:30 p.m. to say the car's accelerator was stuck and he couldn't slow it down.
The caller was driving eastbound on Interstate 8 near San Diego as this was happening, reports CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy. At one point the car was traveling at 90 mph.
The Highway Patrol responded. To get the runaway car to stop, they actually had to put their patrol car in front of the Prius and step on the brakes. The car eventually stopped near La Posta Bridge, but the whole even lasted for about 20 minutes.
California Highway Patrol is planning a news conference to provide more details.

Here's my theory, because it inadvertently happened to me. I have a V AT. If the cruise control is on dynamic cruise and there is a car in front of you, no matter how high you set it, the dynamic cruise control will keep pace with the car in front. Let's say you have it set for 90, but the car in front is only going 60. You will be limited to 60. If the car in front of you leaves your lane, and there are no other cars in front, you will accelerate to 90. It was a strange feeling until I realized what was happening - I had hit the cruise control speed increase a few times. By tuning off the cruise control, my issue was resolved.

Brake fade sucks...... Any vehicle can over power the braking system. Being that I am a truck driver, I've seen it numerous times where a guy rides his brakes and they overheat.

It sounds like the brakes on the Prius are quite small to begin with so, it don't take much to get them overheated.

In a wide open throttle can you shift to Neutral, and turn the car off?

Yes. Carolyn from Luscious Garage demonstrates both in videos:

In addition, the brake will cut power to the engine

I have done this same experiment at slower speed; the brakes have no problem bringing the car to a stop with the pedal floored.

He also reports repeatedly pushing the 'off' button. Someone had proposed allowing multiple pushes in a short interval to also work the same as holding the button in for 3 seconds. I think this idea has merit.

This fellow sounds like a rather inept driver. If he was worried about being rear-ended, did he think to turn on his hazard lights, and then try the maneuver? I don't know about the rest of you, but when I see a vehicle with hazard lights on, I take caution and expect the unusual to happen. Given proper warning, the other drivers wouldn't have hit him. Honestly, I'd rather be rear-ended by a car going close to the same speed as me, than put up with a stuck accelerator and try to weave around traffic.

The driver in question is a real winner. Doesn't know how to turn off his car. Is afraid to put the transmission into neutral. Apparently didn't hold the brake down long enough to override the engine and accelerator.

This sounds like another good 'excuse' - the driver was stoooooooopid. I will update my list of appologies.

    Thank you for sharing.

I think liskipper has a good theory. It fits pretty well, combined with the notion that Mr. Sykes may not even know he has such a thing...

I did see a political cartoon from a couple of weeks ago showing a cop talking to a driver writing a ticket saying that the "unintended acceleration" defense only works if you're driving a Toyota.
