I am going to CarMax on Thursday to have them inspect and value my car. It is a Package V but without Advanced Technology. I leased it for 3 years last July and it's in perfect condition with only about 3,300 miles on it. I absolutely love Prius, this is in fact my 2nd one. However, I do miss my 2006 dearly. I have not been that happy with my 2010 for many reasons, one being the larger wheels and different driving feel because of it.
I plan to get another car, only because I have driven a Prius for 4 years and well to be honest, I am just ready to drive something else. Not if I lose a lot of money though. My payout is in the mid 28k.

Has anyone tried to trade their 2010 in yet? What is being offered? I know that dealerships were offering about 20k because of all the recent negative press, which is absolutely INSANE! My car with tax was close to 34k!!!

I hope to be offered close to 28k from CarMax. My dealership who leased me the car said it would probably be around 26k so I'd lose 2-3k which I may just have to do. Anymore and it wouldn't be worth it.

I'd love to hear what others think. Thanks :)

Should be about 29,000 right now...
Depends on what goodies you got with it, and how much it was.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunatelly u probably pick the worst time in Prius history to sell a Prius. I wish I read this 1 month ago, I'll buy yours in all day long for $26k. A bit off topic, why don't u get a set of stock 15"? I will use my set with cash and trade yours 17" :) Good luck with your new ride!

It's anybody's guess what a dealer might offer you. Since they can get a new one for factory invoice (and these cars aren't exactly in short supply), it will be lower than that. Factory invoice is probably ~$3,000 below MSRP on your car. My guess is invoice is ~$27.5K.

The price of your car with tax isn't relevant, since you don't recoup sales tax when you sell a car.

Given all the incentives Toyota is offering on new cars ($750 cash back on the Prius, I believe, plus cheap lease & finance rates), plus the fact that dealers are dropping their pants on new cars, and whatever the dealer pays you needs to be low enough for them to sell it at a profit (of a couple thousand $), this isn't a good time to try to sell a relatively new used car.

I agree with stream. You really should look into ways of changing the "feel" rather than changing the car and taking such a financial loss at this time. Several thousand dollars will buy a lot of mods.

Just traded in my II. One dealer would not take any Toyotas in a trade. I wound up losing about 18% on my 4 month old car. Maybe you could do better in a private sale.

It's hard to say what Carmax will offer you until you actually go. Most likely it'll be lower than what you expect, but the thing going for you is a Package V with no ATP. The ATP doesn't actually ad any value to the residual so this may possibly help you (per Toyota Financial's information I received before I leased my V).

I wouldn't worry about what your dealership is saying that is 'probable' until you actually inquire about them purchasing your car. You can try other dealerships as well and see what they'll offer you.

Or do the most common thing... list it for sale on Autotrader or CL or something like that for a private sale, and just make sure your price is close to your payoff amount. Or, dump it on swapalease or lease trader. Throw in an incentive to make it go faster if you really want it to.

Different options out there so don't worry about the 'what if' situations. Just go out and do it.

Thanks for all the responses! I am nervous to see what CarMax will offer. Like I mentioned, my car is in perfect condition. It has navigation, the 17" wheels, LED (Xenon) Headlamps, illuminated door sills. I mean it's completely loaded except no AT and obviously no Solar Sunroof. Oh the windows are tinted too!

I do know that when I got my car it was next to impossible to get a Package V with nav and no AT. My dealership had to do a trade with AZ which is where my car was headed. Fortunately it was still on the water when I ordered it.

Oh well, I'll see what CarMax says tomorrow. It does suck that I am doing this at such a bad time but I was told it will only get worse before it gets better so if I'm gonna do it, I may as well do it right now.

Do you hate your Prius this much and need to get rid of it now?

Why don't you ride this over - JUST a bit longer after all this Toyota publicity dies down? You might be ahead of the game if you do that later summer when NOT everyday there is Prius hitting something!

Not to mention that the price of gas is headed up, possibly way up, which always increases the perceived value of the Prius.

I just bought a V with Nav, no tech and so far I love mine. We also own an'08 IV.
I paid under $29,000, besides the $750.00 cash back, for mine because of the "stuff" going on, but I agree with the posters, this will pass and your car will start to level off.
I know this is a much firmer ride, but it's not harsh and gives the feel of a "sportier ride.

My guess is that your going to see ~$24000. I have been looking at the exact same car, package V with Navigation, MSRP $31100 and just walking in the door they have been at $28000.

That isn't even with trying to beat them up further.

At Car Max, that exact car is being discounted $2102 right off the bat.

I can buy a new V-NAV around here for $29057 which is $500 below invoice. The MSRP is now $31300 ($200 increase in February).

IMO you will take a financial bath trying to unload the lease now. It may take some time but the ADD public will forget about this. (When was the last time you heard about earthquakes in Haiti & Chile?) The economy is recovering & gas prices are increasing. Historically the Prius' selling price follows the gas trend.

If there isn't anything wrong with your car (and there probably isn't) you will be much better off keeping it.

You can find somebody who will buy your wheels and tires. I even saw a "wanted" ad for them on this board, from January. Why not offer them for sale on this board, and see if you get any takers?

I mentioned that before in this thread. I've 15" stock wheels & tires and I can buy it outright, if the price is reasonable or trade with yours plus cash. Feel free to PM me.

CarMax is a joke. I went to get my 2010 V ATP appraised and they were only giving me $21,000 for it. It only had 10,000 miles and was in perfect condition. The dealer I bought mine from was willing to give me $26,500. I then found another dealer that was willing to give me $28,000. I quickly sold it to them. This was about a couple of days before they had recalled the 2010 Prius for the brakes. I am scared to see what they would give me now for it. I am glad I sold it when I did and didn't do anymore shopping.

You might want to check Toyota dealers instead of CarMax. Let me know what they give you for it.

    Hi Fred,

Purchased my Prius last Monday. In OC ,CA . I got the 2 yrs. free maintenance, but not the $750 cash back. I know in San Francisco they offer that.

You got a good deal there. Mine is only IV $29,460 with solar. That's the cheapest I found.

    dragon168,

I assume it is either 2 yrs. free maintenance or $750 cash back, right? I think the first 2 years maintenance is less than $750, right? I've not check that but I certainly hope so. Also, I bought my IV with SR and few goodies such as 4 mats, rear bumper protector for $28K and some changes less than one month ago in Nor Cal, exactly the Tuesday they announce the Gem III recall.
