About a week old, but I didn't see it posted here. A nice opinion piece. I have a few quibbles with some of his technical points that he seems to not understand well, but the overall opinion and concepts make a lot of sense.

Thanks Evan! He believes it ; you and I as well as many of us on PChat believe it. Unfortunatelly thanks to what is in the media a lot of people have a different perspective.

Peoples' fears are often irrational. My mother is afraid to fly in an airplane, but she will willingly climb into a car piloted by my 87 year old father.

And you can increase your odds of survival in the very rare event of an actual "unintended acceleration" by learning the details of what action(s) to take and practicing those action(s) in a controlled environment.

Personally, I'm way more concerned about other drivers than I am about mechanical/electrical failures.

There you go again, giving us all a healthy dose of proper perspective!

Now wait a minute, the person that did those calculations ... can he be trusted? Does he work for Toyota, or even worse, the government (like me)? What about his calculator or computer ... was it kept in secretive Toyota custody for a few days before the calculation was made?

He works for a funeral home. I don't see any reason not to trust him.

The hub is frustrated that I refuse to ride on the motorcycle with him. "What, don't you trust me?" "I trust you. I don't trust the other idiots out there."

Obvious conflict of interest. The more people he can put in unsafe cars the better his buisness will be. :D:rolleyes:

    This is a funny thread.

    It all doesn't matter.

Toyota can't market with "Toyota's are Safe Enough".

Sure the media has been a circus and the media has been unfair. I think the realization that your Toyota recalled, repaired or unrecalled or not, is actually the same relatively safe vehicle that you have driven and trusted for years will slowly seep back into the public concious.

But in the meantime, people buying cars don't like the idea that the automobile they are purchasing is even minutely, fractionally less safe than anything comparable on the road. Infact, people look for the evidence that the vehicle they are buying might actually be "safer"....

Safe "Enough" is not Good Enough....even if it might be true.

I used to work for a truck manufacturer. Some of the engineers joked that we should use the marketing slogan "We're no worse than anyone else"

You just have to spin it the right way. Remember the Dilbert strip where they were in a meeting discussing a problem. The flip chart said: "Problem: Our product is killing our customers."

The marketing people spun it by rephrasing in a positive tone: "Customer complaints decline."

I suggest the following slogan: "Toyota cars: they kill people with or without SUA."

A conspiracy between Toyota, an emergency room doctor and a funeral home. :tinfoil3:

We now have the intersection, and the beginnings of a conspiracy theory.

I believe that this suspected extra risk is much smaller than the industry average risk improvement each model year as automobile designs become safer.

My extra risk from upgrading cars once a decade instead of every year is vastly greater than these alleged Toyota risks.
