You do know, of course, that I am being literal just to have fun. If daniel took a literal approach to this thread, I would talk entirely in metaphors. Sometimes it's fun to be intentionally confused. Sometimes I'm just confused. What were we talking about?

Ya know, when I was growing up I had an Aunt and Uncle who lived on a farm. One day my cousin brought home this turkey and called it a pet - he would never say where he got it. There is an idea - if Daniel could only befriend an benevolent passer by on the way to the party, maybe he could be a pet?

Anyway we used to chase the turkey around because we were annoying curious children. So when the turkey got tired of us, it would peck us until we ran away. It was kinda like tag.

Playing tag for eternity could be fun. :)

P.S. The turkey's name was Tom.

I see exactly what Daniel is talking about and he is no more out of it that the goose who came up with the supernatural being bull plop story in the first place and a large part of the American population are gullible enough to believe that crap.

Maybe we're the stuff they make the plastic bag out of.

I don't really talk about god that much. I talk about peoples' belief in god.

Yeah, I've been criticized a lot for that. Also for being too logical. Though I thought in this thread I was being purely allegorical. Odd that I get criticized for being literal in the one thread where I'm being allegorical and a little bit silly.

We are made of material stuff, which can be converted to energy and can condense out of energy. But our personality, or soul, if you will, is a process which only exists while the process (life) goes on. Just as a corpse has no personality or consciousness, so when our material body dies and decomposes, our consciousness (the concept I am expressing when I say "me" or "I" ends.

I don't "worry" about any of this. But loneliness leads to boredom and boredom leads to contemplation and contemplation leads to stuff like this thread.

Maybe if I had a girlfriend I would not need to spend so much time on topics like this. In fact, if I had a girlfriend who was religious or spiritual and who found my ideas annoying, I would be happy to shut my mouth and keep them to myself.

Sigh! If I was not who I am, maybe girls would like me. I think that's what you're saying. Though atheists reject me as much as theists do.

    Thank you, Pat!

Dating requires marketing. I'm not saying girls won't like who you are. Just that you have to ease people into who you are, not lay it all out at the onset. That's true for everybody, not just you. You don't sell a car by immediately pointing out every quirk. Some women will find your directness offputting initially until they get to know you better. (I've had the same issue myself, whereby I don't beat around the bushes, and until people know me, they find it a bit unsettling). Hence, you will have better luck by initially being more moderate and then trending back to "who you are".

To sell yourself, you have to "Relax and go with it" as Octavia said.

With all this turkey talk, it's time to once again bring up Mike The Headless Chicken. He is much more interesting than any old turkey.

In the end, all that we are and all that know will be dust in the void of long extinguished stars. I suppose the good news is that we're having a great time during the Goldy lox phase. ;)

    Yup (Allegedly, of course).
There are only 2 things that matter in life...The happiness we get to enjoy and the legacy (family, memories, reputation, etc) we leave behind. We tend to focus on one when we are young and the other as we age.

If you weren't who you are, perhaps you would be a girl. I don't know if this would alter your opinion about God or the devil, but hens generally view things differently than toms.

Sounds a bit like a Rod Serling "Twilight Zone" episode titled, I think "To Serve Man".

In other words, lie about who I am. It's not that I'm unwilling to lie in order to get a girlfriend; it's just that I'm not very good at it. "Marketing" is a euphemism for lying.

I took the following as a criticism. I was not offended. But I took it as criticism:

And neither will matter once we are dead and forgotten. Life really is pointless. It just is. Life is merely something that happens as energy takes in its inexorable path from order to entropy.

We live our lives accumulating memories and experiences, and it's those memories and experiences that make up who we are. Then we die, and POOF! all those memories are gone, and the experiences are as if they never happened. There's a little bleed-over as people remember us, and the rare person is remembered for a few hundred or a few thousand years, but even that will be gone in a geological eye-blink. And most of us will not be remembered past the lifetime of our immediate friends and family.

Why does everyone assume that I approach women with philosophical speculations about god and the meaning of life??? I don't think I have ever broached these subjects with anyone who was not already a friend, or here on the internet, where I speak my mind freely. I don't hide who I am or lie about what I believe, but when I meet someone in a social situation I seldom or never have even mentioned religion until they ask me flat out what religion I am. At that point, a lie would be found out soon enough, and then I'd be forever branded in their mind as a liar. Certainly worse than their knowing that I'm an atheist, unless all I was looking for is a one-night stand and never see them again, and frankly, I'm really not all that interested in a one-night stand.

Just because it ends? No. Live it, while you still can - that's the point.

I assure you I am living it. But it's still pointless. Once I die, it will be exactly as though I never lived. And the same for the rest of us. Oh, maybe a few will be remembered for a little while. But the human race will go extinct, the sun will nova and engulf the Earth, and the universe will be absolutely no different than if the human race had never been. That does not bother me. It's just the way it is. But I don't kid myself into believing that I am here for a "reason." Or anyone else either.

I differ with Daniel on whether we are here for a reason...

I believe we are here for a reason...

I do not believe it is contained in any of the religious works produced by man... nor those that man claims were divined by the creator...

As a former confirmed alterboy, a follower of American Native cultural beliefs, and a current ordained minister in the ULC, my conflict is profound, yet not one that finds it necessary to condemn those that find solace in the words of the religious works and practices that have continued to today, albeit by usurping and killing of non-believers under the guise of doing the will of the creator... however... when I look into the complexities of life, as exhibited here on this third rock from the sun, I cannot follow that there was no way a creator was not involved in some of it... however, with that being said... I also believe the creator may simply be a process... as in physics... whereas, if certain conditions exist, a new creation will begin... as in another Big Bang Event... like the Hindus have said, and the Buddhists have said, and my Grandfather's Siouxan beliefs alluded too... this isn't the only universe... or the only creation in this universe for that matter... but a continuing process of creation and destruction without end, and outside of the fourth dimension...

I believe Daniel hit the nail... but the nail isn't the only one on the board, and it isn't going in straight... we may indeed be the "turkey" on the menu... but, if the goal of creation is to have a great menu, ain't you glad that you're considered a main course, and not just a disposable napkin to be cast aside into the fireplace after the meal is done.
