the conditions to drive this car would include this:

    1. The car looked like a generic 4 door sedan.
    2. You'd have to trade in your prius for it.
    3. It could not be known that this generic looking car got this terrific mileage, and when asked, you'd have to say that it got 20 mpg.

So the bottom line for this exercise is, would you be greener at the cost that no one could know you were being so?

If I still got to go in the HOV lane until the end of the year then absolutely.

    A. Of course.

    B. What a bizarre assumption that Prius drivers only drive it as some sort of status symbol.

I do not drive a Prius to be geen.......
I got it because the car payment was less than what I was putting into the 4Runner in gas expense!
Plus I get to keep the 4Runner, and the Prius!
I drive it ONLY because I get +400 miles for 8 gal of gas. period!!!

Also I do not like diesels, or VW.

    Yes, for the MPG.

No, because I have to give up the hatchback.

I would sorely miss my hatchback.

Since there's no mention of sticker price, I would have to assume that it's the same price as the Prius unless trading in the Prius would be an even trade.

I would do it but keeping the mileage under wraps would be difficult. That would be the hardest one of the restrictions.

I don't assume that all prius drivers only drive it as a status symbol, but some prius drivers(probably not on this board) do enjoy it. Never seen the south park episode of the pious drivers?

Have you ever seen plug in vehicles where it's boldly labeled that it's a "plug in"? What's the point of doing that other than to let everyone know you're driving one?

It would be extremely difficult to give up the hatchback... not sure i could. If this car had a hatchback option, then i'd do it in a heartbeat. Green is good, saving money, better.

If it came in a hatchback, yes.
Although I'd need to get a bumper stick that said "F*** OPEC".
I don't need that with the Prius...It's implied.
It'd actually be better, as you would't have to get tailgated by reckless truck drivers, or explain to people that you don't need to plug it in, and that YES, the brakes work just fine, etc. etc.

The car you described IS what most of us desire (hopefully from a US maker) but it does not exist and is not likely to.

I presume that by "milleage" you mean mileage.

It would depend on several factors involving build quality, reliability, and safety. I would not trade my Prius for a 100-mpg VW Bug (technically a sedan). I would not trade for a car that got poor crash-test ratings. I would not trade for a car that hurt my back to drive for 6 hours, since almost the only time I burn gas is for long road trips. Otherwise I "burn" electrons.

I don't brag about my Prius's gas mileage. I am ashamed of it. As Darell says, the Prius is my gas guzzler.

To promote the concept. My electric car says "ALL ELECTRIC ALL THE TIME" because I want people to see that electric cars exist and they work.

Of course I have! Last time I renewed my license tags, I changed my plate to: IPLUGIN

My message isn't "I plug in and you don't", but rather "I plug in and you could too!"

The Prius is not a status symbol. It is the cheapest car on my street beside all the Mercedes and Lexuses and BMWs. Everyone feels sorry for how poor I must be.

I'd give up the hatchback if the rear seats folded down independently. Gotta be able to bring a snowboard/skis or 2 road bicycles with me inside the car.

Prius is extracting 40% energy of the gasoline. Doubling Prius' MPG would require 80% efficiency. I doubt an internal combustion engine would be able to do that.

I am hearing a lot of voices about Prius hatchback utility rather than the "unique hybrid look" as the reason for buying Prius.

    1 and 2, yes.
    3, NO.

I want to spread the word about higher efficiency.
I don't care if it is a Prius, EV1, Volt, Ford, Leaf or other vehicle. I would miss the hatchback, but would live with it.
I also want dealers and manufacturers to know WHY I am buying a vehicle (efficiency). If I can't tell them, it defeats the purpose.

I don't care that it "looks like a generic 4 door sedan", so long as it still holds a 17 foot ladder and four 8 gallon tubs of network gear, as well as passengers. I would still want it to be the least polluting car available that goes 400 miles before fillups/recharging/adding water to Mr. Fusion/etc. as the Prius is now. I would cheerfully lie if it pollutes less.

I do not drive a Prius to be seen driving, I drive to get my job done most effeciently.

Reading the above pos tindicates to me that I am miles apart from some of you in my interest and motives. Personally, image, or "making a statement" is contrary to my interest and/or desire. I would not own a car with graphics plastered on the side; I do not install bumper stickers; nor signs in the windows. I do not like garish colors either.

I will trade my G3 when I am ready. When that occurs, I have no idea. Right now, I am thoroughly enjoying my Prius. I may be forced to purchase new because it is worn-out, or in dis-repair as a result of an accident. I am sure the day will come when I find a newer model that I like more, or suits my needs. I am not "trendy" nor especially "green." I am glad that the G3 is environmentally friendly, but that was not my motive.

My next purchase will be based on exhaustive research, safety, efficiency, quality, dealer cooperation, and reports from automotive magazines, including Consumer Reports, as well as others. Finally, I will test drive the vehicle, and negotiate the most favorable price I can. That is how I purchased my G3, and I see no reason to change.
