OK ridiculous question I have a lease deal that I have not signed on a 2010 Package 2 car. I need conformation that at some point that two kayaks on the roof is a reasonable option. I have seen a few pictures here on the site.

It looks like a gen three on the outside. If I can get Thule racks on a Gen II then I know I can make the mounts. Surfboards, bikes all seem to fit but its the Kayaks that is holding me up currently.

These I think are 13 foot sit on tops mine are ~10 foot internals so slightly smaller.

Cool, John I was trying to link some of your photos of your car, but the forum kept eating them. Dealer keeps telling me the 10's are different from the 08-09's on racks and has nothing in the parts computer. Seen a few 10's with surfboard and even a huge Thule rack. If I can get 52 inch bars I should be able to fix everything.

Sold my SRT-10 Ram and the current car cannot even carry a tune let alone a bike and a kayak so this is a improvement in just about every way. .

I have a Thule rack on my Gen III (400XT feet, rectangular bars, no fairing, no sunroof) for carrying kayaks, and lots of other things that don't fit inside. Totally possible.

Thanks for all the help, My package II is now safely in the driveway. Unfortunately its the commuter so the vipers get to stay in the garage but have a appointment locally to get the racks on Wednesday.

Lease is 795$ + tags. Payment is 239 on a Package II with pearl paint and mats.Paid for the first year up front and will pay the rest of in a week or two. The savings in gas alone for me on top of the insurance savings of having a commuter pay for the car almost three times over.

Just ordered Thule 480 racks and Malone auto loaders, to transport 2 kayaks. Was wondering if anyone suggests removing the racks, when not in use for any extended periods of time.

Very satisfied carrying my two 10 foot sit on top kayaks with my Thule 480 racks and Malone auto loaders. Am able to easily remove everything when not in use for a week or two.

What kind of gas mileage do you get with your kayaks in a perpendicular fashion? I am curious as I was looking to order the J hooks for a Thule rack and had a friend mention that I would get better gas mileage if the kayaks were laid out flat on the roof racks.

    Thanks for any info,

I have a gen III prius level five, and with the thule racks with the foldable j bars and no kayaks, i get about a 5% hit on milage (J bars folded down) With 1 river runner kayak on top, i drop down to about 40mpg, and with two or with 17 foot sea kayaks i drop further. Its also important to note that when i have kayaks on the roof, I'm usually doing highways, so the drop is more pronounced at the higher highway speeds.

Ok folks, I recently moved from Amarillo Texas to Wilmington North Carolina. I currently have a 2016 Prius and a 2010 Prius. I guess the 2010 can be a beach car. Since we know nothing about boating, I think kayaks are probably a good place to start.

I see on this thread it somebody bought something called a Thule 480 and an auto loader? Please help this newbie understand what that means. Do I just need to buy this thing? Amazon.com: Thule 480 Traverse Foot Pack (Set of 4): Sports & Outdoors

Does anyone mind walking me through what to order? Thank you so much.

Also, I don't know anything about kayaks... any advice? I have 3 people (Wife, 6 year old and myself) and we live 1 mile from Masonboro Island, so we'd like to be able to paddle to the beach... coming from bone dry Amarillo, I'm new to all of this.

I like kayaks...but I've gone to the inside Minivan hauling approach. You have to decide what you want to do ocean vs. lake/river. I decided on a 10-ft (short) pond fishing style that could fit in a Prius (hatch partially open) or minivan. Longer is much faster for covering distance. Mine is slow. On boats, length determines speed. Also you may want tandem with 2 seats.
