Think Boats and "Camper Canvass". Just find someone who does boat canvass and they usually will come to your boat (car) measure for what you desire and then make it and fit it! Material is usually sunbrella and generally the work from these guys is top notch so expect to pay for it. It will last darn near forever and there is nothing like quality workmanship.

I was checking on this tent. On one of the online buy sites it did list the Prius an acceptable care. sportz
    dome-to-go model # 86000. List price anywhere from $239 to $289.

What a great idea, can't wait for summer.

I keep an Engel MT45 fridge in the prius. I work full time and go to school at night, so the fridge is my way of keeping decent food available for a long day. I wired a 12v outlet in the back (like this car should have had from the factory, my wife's mini cooper has one back there) thats "always hot". I did kill the 12v battery the first week using the fridge in "freezer" mode, but havent had issues since I've turned it down. It runs 24/7. Bad picture, but the only one I have, its the grey/brown thing on the right.

The sleep pad is where I camp, the gear moves to the front and I lay on the pad during roadtrips. I'm 6'4" and usually take my truck or RV for trips but when its alot of driving, I sleep and camp in the Prius.

Great pics of the tent, thats a good idea.

I don't want to add a tent but am excited to try to sleep inside the car. I use to do it all the time when I was younger. I'm too cheap to pay for a motel room just to sleep a few hours.
Is the best way to sleep in the car with your head toward the front or the back. I'm 5'9" and was thinking I would like to have my head facing toward the back with my feet between the front seats.
It's been way to cold since we bought the car to do any experimenting with how I fit.

Sleeping & traveling in a Prius

Instead of pitching a tent, I also sleep in my Prius ('04), head up by the front seats.

In fact, I'm going on a 6-month cross-country trip next week using my Prius as an RV. Check out this post in my blog if you are interested in the set-up details: Suanne Online in 2010: A Prius RV.

Last October I tried it out for a month, camping my way from the Seattle area to Lassen, Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Redwood National Parks in CA ... it was great ... and my Prius performed admirally. The only thing I'm doing differently for this upcoming trip is that I've tinted the windows for privacy and installed side window deflectors so I can crack the windows in the rain.

    Wow so cool.
I'm excited to follow your blog.
Do you put any mosquito netting over your open windows?

Yes, I got some no-see-um netting and am making some screens before I leave ... at least for the back windows.

Thanks for checking out my blog, too.

Coleman and others make ice chests that keep cold for up to five 90+ days. We usually do at least one five day backpack in the Sierras each year, and there's nothing like that first cold beer when you get back to the car.

There's usually ice still left, even in the summer, so they do work as advertised.

Looks like we can no longer get this product unless someone sells one used on eBay.

Prius Camping - mosquito netting success!

We did a test run in our new 2008 prius w/ handsewn (wimpy) netting from the dime store, a rain fly, and an air mattress. Fairly decent. Closed the netting into front door, added magnet at each back corner, and tucked the backend surplus under our air mattress (Hatch up). Only dislike was that the 6" air mattress felt too tall.

I'm pleased to report, however, that we just bought 2 army surplus "bar field netting" "Genuine US army mosquito net" for about $7 each, $25 w/ shipping. Got them from allegheny surplus outlet, PA, 888 216-7159 - but just check on ebay. There are plenty, they'll all be slightly used - mine sure look brand new, and ought to last forever.

They are huge. 12'x17', rectangular w/ rounded corners. With the hatch down they cover the entire car with plenty of room to spare. They are nylon, durable, fine net (ain't gonna be no black flies or gnats), dark green, so a mild amount of privacy. There are tie-tabs at edges, ends, solid hems, and there's no way you'll accidentally poke your foot through the netting. I bought 2 and will extend the backend so it'll cover fully with the hatch up.

Then with the rain fly from our camping tent extended over the windows - no problems!

Got 2 -24' x 60' x 3' foam from the fabric store - much more comfortable than the air, with clothes bag filling in the gap under our feet.

Will do --- hmm, my pics didn't post, perhaps because I'm too new. So I'll add them to my website.

Additional wonders of the army surplus netting: the two rear ties are perfectly located to tie to the rear cargo tie-downs. Which (especially if you fasten the front tie, and/or add a bungee cord to a side tie) keeps the hatch from soaring skyward in the middle of the night if you don't have a rain fly and kick it.

Also took a couple of pics of our foam, cut to fit.
Let me try to post the pics again, and if they aren't here, then go to prairiecomm.net - I'll put a link on the home page.
