Different BlueTooth modes?

    When I first got the car I paired my iPhone with the phone system and everything worked great, but in audio I didn't have the BlueTooth stereo option available. I then removed the pairing from the phone, and paired it again to the audio system in the Prius. Now I have BlueTooth audio working great, and the phone seems to work fine too.

    So, after all that preamble, a simple question. Is there any reason not to pair the phone with the audio system? Will I still get all the regular phone features working right? Will I need to do anything different to make/receive calls?

    I don't have an iPhone, but BT audio didn't affect the ability to make calls on my HTC Fuze. I don't recall if I've ever gotten a call while streaming music from my phone. I think the only effect might be that the music would pause when a call comes in and you might have to manually restart it.

    Right, that's what I figured, but I am a bit confused as to exactly how this all works. Let me walk through how it's set up now.

    First I paired my phone to the telephone bluetooth (default passcode 1212). Then I wanted to pair it to the stereo, but on the iPhone I first had to delete the existing profile, so I did that. Then I paired it to the stereo bluetooth (default passcode 0000), and it worked fine. What confuses me, though, is that it still works fine with the phone as well as the stereo. Now, to further confuse things, I paired my wife's phone (also an iPhone) with the phone system in the Prius and now I can choose my wife's phone, but still have my phone playing music through the stereo.

    Just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with any of this behavior, it's all working the way I would like it to, but I don't understand how, and that bugs me...:)

    Hmmm... that's interesting. I hadn't thought about pairing one device for calls and a different one for music. I guess that makes sense since there are two different passcodes. And in the bluetooth setup on my phone, it's a simple matter to select which functions to use with a particular device so just because a device can receive stereo audio, you don't have to enable it for that device.

    I will have to try that the next time I have a passenger with a bluetooth capable phone, see if I can get it to use one for audio and the other for calls. Thanks. Another toy to play with. :)

    What confuses me is why my iPhone still works in phone mode even though I removed that pairing...

    Based on my experience with the iPhone last week, I got the distinct impression that I can have either the audio OR the phone, not both simultaneously. I recall that I got an incoming call while the phone was streaming audio, and the call was handled by the iPhone (not the BT handsfree feature). I was going to retest/retry for simultaneous pairing both audio/phone after reading some comments here.

    Are you certain you had both audio/phone paired simultaneously?
