When you are driving & you see another Prius, what do you do?

    Hello all -
    I am a newbie and love my Prius - so much so that when I see another Prius approaching me when driving - which is often since I live in Portland, Oregon - that i want to give them a wave, nod, smile, friendly gesture etc - almost like a secret handshake of Prius owners - but that does not seem like a common practice which surprises me.

    I used to have a "summer car" a 65 VW Bug convertible & whenever I saw other vintage bug drivers we would give the froendly nod, wave, thumbs up as we drove past each other.

    Why do you think Prius owners don't want to engage in the same behavior? How do we change this?

    My wife treats the Prius like its a pet and says hi to its sister/brother/cousin depending on color. woman is weird.

    Depending on your area, it might be more accepted. In the San Jose area, there's too many Prius to be special. You can't drive more than a 1/4 mile without seeing another Prius. At work, there's 5 of us that park in front of the building or the first level of the garage. I'm sure there's more hiding elsewhere. Waving at everyone would get old fast.

    Hi Liz,
    Many of us have other lives and treat our Prius as an enabling tool for what we really enjoy:

    • on call, repair of other Prius
    • our work lives
    • fascination with our experiments
    • working out obscure math problems
    • listening to our podcasts and laughin' our *sses off
    Let me suggest another approach that works.

    Find people who post interesting things who live in or around Portland Oregon. Then send a PM asking if they'd like to meet for lunch. Unlike a wave, breaking bread is a much better way to find out what wonderful, fascinating, and even irksome but brilliant people own and drive Prius.

    I drive a '10 Prius, and my wife a '10 Camry. We have both noticed other Toyota drivers waving or tooting their horns at us lately in a display of unity and support.

    If I waved at every Prius I pass, my wrist would suffer from carpal tunnel. Heck, I counted 10 Priuses just from parking at Whole Foods the other day!

    There are so many here in the San Francisco East Bay that it would be like waving to every third car, so I reserve my waves for the other Barcelona Red's.

    You are a proud first time owner of a Prius and expecting to be congratulated by every passing Prius. I know your feeling.
    But the Prius is around for almost ten years it is not something to be excited any more.
    So calm down and don't expect the others will wave at you.

    I look at the driver and wonder if I look as old as they are...

    For whatever reason, only the 60+ crowd seems to drive a prius over here- i'm half their age.

    I'll have to admit that when I see another Prius I do get the feeling like they are "one of the family". If I'm not busy in traffic I may look over to see the driver but I've never waved, smiled, etc. I'm not saying I would never do it either. I'm just reminded of the South Park episode where they made fun of hybrids and how smug their drivers supposedly are and reluctant to appear that way. LOL. :)

    Smug grin here, too. (Waving hasn't produced any replies.) Just got 53.7 mpg on a trip through the rolling hills of Wisconsin. The Prius loves hills and mountains!
