In the immortal words of Dave Barry, I swear I am not making this up:

You've gotta love our brave new world, where every second our computers are trying to sucker us into doing more with them. Those of you who use Yahoo might have noticed the little notice across the top about who is "TRENDING NOW" or similar words, all with the root "trend" stuck in them somewhere--the idea is to get you to click on that and use their search services, which will advertise things to you. They change every few hours or so.

But you have to wonder what the advertiser's algorithm is that would promote the current notice at the top of the e-mail page:

    "Trending: Al-Qaida"

Isn't there anything so bad it can't be used for advertising?

    No.

If it will sell newspapers, then it is news. That guiding principle of advertising is alive and well, and living on the 'Net.

No, and that is why I try to ignore advertising as much as possible.
