Both the Fusion and the Camry can take either a 4cyl or 6cyl engine (but the hybrids are made with only 4cyl). This does demand more space up front, and more metal structure.

Yes but what they're saying is that the 2011 Sonata isn't designed to take a 6 cylinder in the engine bay thus Hyundai engineers can build a car with a smaller engine bay, thus less metal used.

That was a smart move and it shows they are ahead of the game.

    A ok :D
well will this 4cyl instead of a v6 really mean that lot of less steel for the front part of the car?
    cant really believe that.
using 4cyl instead of v6's will mean more savings in weight than the few inches/cms of savings on the ice bay.
but then agian al small parts togheter and you have lot of junk less:D

The bottom line is what does it cost? That will differentiate hybrids, since the puiblic could care less about the technology differences. What's the cost and what's the gas mileage. Those are the primary factors, in my view.

In terms of cost, Honda is cheapest, Toyota (Prius) next, followed by Ford Fusion and Nissan Leaf. Maybe the Fusion/Leaf are near the Prius after govt rebate. The Sonata pricing will be a key to its marketability.

I don't know but when we had a Camry 2.4, there was a LOT of empty space in the engine bay. Ditto the new Camry (which has an even larger V6 option.. 3.5 litres). Tons of room in the 2.4 litre version. Of course the Camry Hybrid has less since some of that room is taken up by the hybrid components.

Answering my own question. ISG is 8.5 kW. Source

The difference between HBD and HSD.

    8.5 kW ISG = 30 kW(?) MG1
    30 kW MG = 60 kW MG2
