I've got a 2007 Prius with approx 41k miles and started noticing last week a high pitched whine when I'm stopped, car idle from under the hood. I can make the sound go away by turning off the A/C. I'm not sure exactly what is causing the problem but has anyone else expierenced this type of whine and is it normal for the A/C to make this noise. It sounds like my ears are ringing.

Interesting. I assume that you've owned the car for a while and that this is a new noise?

I suggest that you open the hood and see where the noise is coming from. It probably is coming from either the inverter or the AC compressor.

Once you've determined the location of the noise and can replicate it upon demand, visit your Toyota dealer's service dept and see what they can do for you.

If the problem is in the inverter then it should be covered under the hybrid system warranty. If the problem is in the AC compressor then you'll probably have to pay for its replacement if you don't have extended warranty coverage. Good luck.

My 07 makes the same sound when motor off and ac on. Quite loud. On mine its the inverter which is normal. Make sure though its coming from the inverter like Patrick said.
One thing absolutely sure though is if there's any inverter issue it will throw a cel.So if no cel no worries.
