Well, after looking at all the trouble people are having with their Gen I Prius, I canceled my order on the 2001, and went and got a 2007 driftwood pearl that has package 2 and 52,000 miles for $14,300. I love the car and it looks like new, and was happy to at least get package 2 because I have the back-up camera, side airbags, AUX jack, smart key, and VSC. Well, at least I'm pretty sure it has VSC, in fact I'm positive. You see, I was on my way to Brads moms house (Brad_rules_man) and took a gravel road there, I wanted to see the VSC work so I got up to about 23mph or so and turned the wheel as if I were in an emergency situation and the car went where I turned it, then I turned it the other way and about that time when I did that, it skidded to a stop sideways. (mind you this is in the middle of no where so no one was in harms way.) But the VSC never beeped to correct me, the slip light never flashed or anything. Can you guys help me out? I know this car has it because in the 2008 Brochure, it stated that package #2 has smart key, back-up camera, VSC, and mine has the AUX hook up for my iPod.

I don't believe the 2007 package 2 has VSC, although I'm not an expert on the 2007 packages.

The window sticker for my 2007 Prius notes under Optional Equipment:

HG Package #2 includes: Vehicle Stability Control; Backup Camera;Smart Key System; AM/FM CD w/6 Speakers; Aux Audio Input Miniplug, and MP3/WMA Playback Capability

So your car should have VSC. I can't explain why it failed to work. Maybe a trip to a dealer is in order to check it out.

Thanks for the correction. I recall that in 2006 you had to move upscale a bit to get VSC.

Hey guys, just talked to Toyota and they said that the VSC is not designed to work in loose dirt or gravel because it can not grip into it. He said it's mostly designed for wet, slippery, snowy, or icy roads. :)

Well, whether it's designed or not the system can't tell when you're on gravel. So it should work either way.

Do note however, if you just slip the front wheels VSC doesn't seem to engage. At least with Pearl, it's only when the back wheels slip as well. And a four wheel drift shouldn't trigger it, because the car can't tell you're slipping. In fact, I have only noticed the beep and light when the -rear- starts to step out.
Try getting the rear to slide and that -should- give you a light and beep.

Thats what the car did. We even tested Brads 2010 Prius in the same place and the VSC was beeping and correcting us. In mine, the back of the car swung around, and I skidded to a stop sideways and the VSC didn't beep once, nor did it correct me.

VSC should still activate on gravel. When I drive on gravel roads, i like to fish tail the car and the VSC beeps like mad.

Yep, just went back to the same place to do another test, I was on the same flat gravel road, this time I was going 24 or so MPH and I jerked the wheel back and fourth to try and make the car fish tail, and to see once again if my VSC would finally work, and once again, no beeps, no flashing slip lights, and no correction to the wheels...

Then you probably don't have VSC.

Make the car IG-ON (press the POWER button 2x without depressing the brake pedal, from IG-OFF) and look at the various warning lights illuminated in the instrument panel. Do you see the VSC light appear?
