It was originally Rae Vynn's idea, but since she seems reluctant to start a thread, I'll do it.

Rio Caliente is a spa 20 miles outside of Guadalajara (the city I would most recommend for anyone who wants to experience Mexico -- it is not filthy like Mexico City, or especially dangerous like some of the border towns, and it has the real flavor of Mexico). Rio Caliente has hot springs and appears to have the usual spa stuff, plus hiking. The food is vegetarian plus dairy, and white meat once a week for those who want it. There is no alcohol served. The cost is a fraction of Rancho la Puerta, where I have gone three times. There appears to be a small discount for groups, and we'd get rooms all together.

This thread is to gauge whether there is actually interest in a Prius Chat get-together there. It looks to me that the best time of year would be late March - early April. No rain, no humidity, warm daytime temperatures and cool but not cold nights.

This is a serious poll. Please avoid frivolity in your poll answers. We'd like to find out if this is an idea to pursue or if too few would be able to go and interested.

Daniel - This is a really interesting idea and I'd certainly be interested. Naturally it would depend mostly on the cost & logistics of the trip. Being on the East coast, I imagine it's not a short trip, so a long weekend might be tough.

Definitely keep me in the loop.

Check their web site for prices and your favorite travel site for air fare. I would not go for less than a full week, but there's no reason people could not go for as long or as short a time as they choose. E.g., Wednesday to Wednesday with people who can only manage a weekend dropping in for that, or some variation on the theme.

But we'd need a lot more interest for it to happen as a group thing.

After I research it some more, I could conceivably decide to go myself, then post my dates and anyone who wanted to go at the same time could do so. Of course that would nix the group discount.

Let's see if anyone else jumps in to express interest. Guadalajara is a major city, so should be easy to schedule flights to.

Sorry, wrong time of year for me. But I like the idea of a group vacation; that could be fun.

Google Map and Google Earth keep tossing the location into a suburb of Tijuana. Their web site claims, "Rio Caliente is located approximately 20 miles west of Guadalajara, in the Mexican state of Jalisco."

Any possibility of getting coordinates or a Google Map link of where the spa is located?

Is there an active volcano near by?

Their web site says they have an association with La Primavera village. If you plug "La Primavera, Jalisco, Mexico" into the Google Earth search box, you should be in more or less the general area.

Guadalajara has had earthquakes, but I never felt one during the semester I lived there. You're probably safer in Guadalajara than in Los Angeles.

I think the nearest volcano is some 50 miles (???) away.

All depends on what sort of "group" activities you have in mind

Though I know you are just being silly, I will say for folks who might actually be interested, that the "group" merely gets us a discount. Everyone can take advantage of whatever spa activities they like, and we'd get to meet each other and spend whatever time together we like.

I would love to go but I can't be in Mexico for more that a couple hours without having a Margerita or two and although I love veges and fruits, I couldn't conceive of being there without having carnitas or carne.

This would be like going to a Rehab institute for me.

I found the "Forest of Primavera" and Google Earth wandered around the area but couldn't find the "Ah HAAA! There it is." Not to worry, I sent an e-mail to them asking for longitude and latitude or a Google Map link. We'll see if they are reading it. <GRINS>

While I was scanning the area, I saw a volcano to the North West that appeared to have a steam/ash cloud coming from where the crater had collapsed. I throughly checked the Western slope but didn't find anything there. Would any of these town names sound familiar:

    • Tala
    • El Refugio
    • La Vega
    • Ameca
    • Ahualulco de Mercado
I'm pretty sure it is somewhere in this area:

I'm really not familiar with the area. I lived in Guadalajara for a semester and Santiago de Queretaro (commonly refered to simply as Queretaro) for several years. I visited San Juan del Rio (referred to as simply San Juan) as well as both Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende several times each. There's an airport between Leon de los Aldama (known as Leon) and Guanajuato, and though it has far fewer flights than Mexico City, it's a much easier way to get to Queretaro than flying into Mexico City (known as D.F. -- pronounced Day Effay--, for Distrito Federal).

But the famous volcano is way down near Puebla, to the south east of this map. It's called Popocatepetl, and known as El Pope -- pronounced Ell Popay--. I'm not familiar with any of the volcanoes in the Guadalajara region. But I guess the entire pacific rim is volcanically active.

Come to think of it, the reason the spa has natural hot springs is that the area is volcanic. But then, Yellowstone is the largest known dormant volcano, and when it blows it will end civilization as we know it, if we have not done that job ourselves first.

    Ok,

    I may have found it:

    La Primavera: 20 41' 17.22" N 103 34' 34.41" W - Google Maps

This leads to a road that leads to clusters of buildings that may be resorts:

    1. 20 41' 17.22" N 103 34' 34.41" W - has evidence of hot springs running through property. Many nice huts on the property.
    2. 20 42' 17.78" N 103 35' 00.65" W - has evidence of 'golf' course structures on property, no spring.
    3. 20 41' 29.34" N 103 34' 40.98" W - has evidence of a warm spring but no filled pool evident nor other structures that might be tourista friendly. One car that may be on cinderblocks.
It looks to be just about 1,800 miles from Huntsville: 1,100 to Laredo TX and; 700 miles through Mexico.

No, that's the dinner menu. Scroll out a bit. Sometimes you can't see the trees for the forest.

I was thinking this might be a place my wife might enjoy. But as I look over the activities, this doesn't read like a couples place. It looks more like a lady's spa . . . a good thing for gals but probably not a happy place for their significant others.

I was attracted to the idea of 1,800 miles over and back with extensive driving in Mexico. I've enjoyed the hot springs by Los Padres and the spiritual joy of Big Sur. I was thinking Esalen but it looks like Lady's Night Esalen.

What I'd like to find would be a vacation that has a Lady's program for my wife and day labor work at a place like Art's Automotive . . . In the evening, clean-up, hot-tubs and for creaky old man's and wife's bodies, seminars in massage and yoga/exercise. Vegies are good but teaching vegie cooking with a glass of wine or pint of beer . . . a blue collar, hollar spa.

Their web site says it's mostly popular with the ladies, but men are discovering that they can enjoy it also. Rancho la Puerta (very high-end and very expensive) has far more women than men, but the men who were there (including me) liked it as much as the women did. I have no interest in facials or other "beauty" treatments (none of which make a woman one whit prettier than she was before the treatment), but the fitness classes, the hiking, and the food, were all great. I'd imagine that this place, being much cheaper, would be a lot less luxurious, but still could be as enjoyable for men as for women. But then, I don't eat meat. And while I'm not vegan, I am perfectly happy with a vegan diet, and sometimes request a vegan diet when I feel it would be too complicated to explain my food taboos in detail.

DH and I are very interested in this spa, and are tentatively planning on making a trek there, but probably not until March/April of 2012, due to finances.

I did look at airfares, and a quick look on kayak.com put a round trip to Guadalajara from Seattle about about $500-600 per person. So, we have to put quite a bit away for this one before we go.

We are interested in the hiking opportunities, as well as the yoga, and the day trips into the surrounding towns. Hanging out in hot water is very nice, also. :thumb:
While I like a good massage, facials and 'beauty' treatments tend to seem like wasted effort on me. Volcanic mud packs sound good, though...

A road trip would be much cheaper, and way more fun. :)

But for hiking, that's the wrong direction. :p

I haven't looked at the poll options yet, but have the following thoughts:
1)A group event would be fun--looking at the Detroit event alone it was fantastic to meet people from the site in a real world relaxed situation.
2)A spa/resort is a decent option for many people, but clearly excludes some (those of us with kids).
3)A spa like this one with such a restrictive menu and no alcohol is going to make this an undesireable option for a large number of people. My holiday time and finances are simply too limited to consider spending it somewhere that I can't fully enjoy in a way that suits me. I like red meat, and I enjoy having wine and beer...I'm not gonna get stupid drunk and vomit on your sandeled feet, but the wine extends the pleasure of a meal.

So, I applaud the idea. But think it would improve the chances of getting more 'takers' if it were expanded to a location that would appeal to a broader group with diverse interests.
