In the picture I had moved the spring compressor to another position, hence its unusual placement.

Looking at your pictures there is a clear gap between the top disc and the rest of the unit. Not the case on my car. Yesterday one had no gap and today the other has no gap. Is your car parked on an angle just now? Just wondering if its something to do with whether the shock has some type of compression?

Concerning the cause of the knocking. I thought the same as you. I hit the pothole and the spring was knocked out of the "holder". After driving the car to my friends ( no knocking on the short journey ) and then removing and re-installing the shock it was put back into the correct place. Fingers crossed.

I am selling the car as you wrote but I dont want to sell a car with a potential problem. As I said I would rather of found the problem and fixed it rather than passing it onto the next "innocent" owner.

Anyway I will give it a really good drive tomorrow and stress it as much as I dare to see if I can repeat the knocking. If not I will assume all is well with the car.

To everyone who has helped me I would like to say thank you. This could of been alot worse as money is a little tight just now so thank you!!!

John, how many miles on your 2005? I'm surprised the rubber boot didn't fall apart. I've attached a photo of one of my 2004's front struts that shows the deteriorated condition of the boot.

OK, that is why your suspension parts are still in good condition. >90K miles on my 2004 at the time that worn front strut photo was taken.

    UPDATE:

Drove the car alot today and no problems at all. Perhaps the spring moved or something popped out of alightment. Either or its all good now!

    Thanks everyone!!! :D

Yeah for sure. Was getting worried that it could of been very expensive to repair. On the plus side, this was the first time I removed and replaced the shocks on the front of a car. :p Quite easy really for those that were afraid to try.
