I'm guessing there is "more to the story" in many of these instances, but it does happen...

Be careful, it is easy to overdose and long term it can lead to problems.

Did you try another vet, or go online for the pain killers? Like with the rest of humanity, some vets are crooks. Had a co-worker who onced worked with a vet that would use expired meds and over charge.

having a 3 YO and being around other parents with kids, it seems we have replaced corporate punishment with medical options. not sure that is the way to go here.

unfortunately i am bound by law to toe to the status quo.

Corporate punishment? No, that's what the adults have to endure. ;)

If you mean spanking, that's corporal punishment.

    Otherwise, I'd agree with you.

The issue is much deeper than "we aren't beating kids enough".

As for the forcing of medication, the first link says the child was in the custody of the State. It's not explained how that situation developed. The piece appears to be using the "forced" aspect of the situation to start a larger dialog on giving medications to children in general. It doesn't appear that the author disputes the authority of the decision, just the effectiveness and potential negative consequences. No indication is given that custody was removed due to non-medication.

The 2nd link does have some intriguing examples. But they are all 10 years old at this point and many laws, including HIPAA, have been passed since then. It also appears that many of these cases are school administrators going beyond their powers and making threats wrt custody. It's not clear that any of these threats had actual legal force. There has been legislation in at least the last three Congresses that would prevent federal funding going to any district that pulls this kind of stunt, but it doesn't seem to have broad support.

    Thanks for the links.

Spanking isn't the answer - letting kids be kids is the answer.

Children are not equipped to live as adults - quiet, doing reading and bookwork, sitting all day, and paying attention for long periods of time. Hell, I don't think ADULTS are really equipped for this, either. Children SHOULD play, and run, and explore, and daydream, and play pretend, and take little naps, and get all excited, and roll in the dirt, splash in puddles, and be read to. Let kids live like this when they are little, bring in a little bit of 'learning' as they get older, and perhaps by the time they are 8 or 10, they MIGHT be ready to handle classroom life, but really should still have play time.

Adults should also get out and run, play, laugh, explore, get really dirty, and do a lot of daydreaming. It might cut down on the prescribed medications.

    Absolutely.

Still, the occasional spanking isn't such a bad thing. :p
