That's the key code for the metal key which works in the driver's door lock. This key is used to open the car if the car is locked and the 12 volt battery dies with a dead battery, or to lock the car with the car in the Ready mode. With those code numbers a dealer can make a new mechanical key.

mechanical key?... but they are easy to make.

from what i remember, that code is used to identify the smart key system. you supposedly need that code in order to make other smart keys as it identifies your cars receiver system.

i could be wrong... but i heard of people losing that key and things being a pain for programing new fobs.

It's the key code for the mechanical key. Locksmiths can "code cut" mechanical keys from the numbers, which is how you get a new key if you lose your only copy. I have code cut keys using a file and a pair of calipers.

So ideally one would keep the code plate somewhere safe at home, maybe together with the title of the car.

Exactly. Some dealerships keep them, since owners usually lose the number plate along with the keys.
