Tax tire sales, tire wear rate = roadbed wear rate.

    Triple tax for studs.

Yes, maybe ... but I don't think so. If a tire tax was the method to generate revenue, it should make "burining rubber" an expensive practice.

I am thinking more along the line of having the IRS monitor the EV tax (like they will monitor health care). Every year at the annual inspection, a certificate that certifies the mileage would be submitted along with your taxes. Poor families could get a credit that way. That seems like the direction we are headed.

I cannot even imagine what method will be used to collect taxes from EV operators ... but I am absolutely certain the states will not defer collecting taxes very long.

In 2007 an Insight won The Tour to the Shore rally at 75mpg. In 2008 a different Insight won at 125mpg.

For 2010 Toyota did a good job supersizing the Prius. So far in my experience they haven't improved FE.

As it is there aren't enough taxes being collected to maintain our transportation infrastructure. Yes, taxes are going to have to increase but I don't see much movement in that direction.

There is a Federal income tax credit when an EV is purchased and no NJ sales tax which saves 7%. Not collecting taxes from the affluent has proved a fine way to finance government.

It was all over the news today, inverviews from both Congressional Democrats and Republicans, that as a result of the Gulf oil disaster, the energy policy and considerations on offshore oil drilling have been shelved [until the public forgets a little]. Additionally, numerous offshore drilling plans have been placed on hold for now. Revenue will need to come from elsewhere.

The state taxes our sailboat. Give them time and they will find a way.
