We picked up a machine screw and it punctured the previously repaired patch:
The screw is at the 1:00 o'clock position and the irregular dark area is the shadow. No one is going to patch a patch. So the passenger side wheel looks like:
Now I have time to really look at the rear suspension. But there are a list of things to do:

    1. Order a full-size ZVW30 wheel - using Ebay and other sources, I'll get one, OEM style wheel
    2. Choose Sumitomo replacement for Avid P195/65R15 - this gives me an opportunity to test my wife's car with oversized, diameter tires similar my tests with our NHW11, 2003 Prius.
    3. Look for mooncap wheel covers - to reduce aero drag
    Any suggestions? Comments?

    Thanks,
    Bob Wilson

This is fate's way of telling you to replace that tire. If you don't, the next step will be a meteorite strike that will vaporize your entire car.

Toyota has a buy 3 get 1 free. The four, Sumitomo T4 195/65R15s will be $240 before mounting, balancing, e.t.c. Tire rack sells them for $55/each before shipping, mounting, e.t.c. So roughly the prices are within $20 of each other . . . I'm going with the Toyota replacements:

    • Sumitomo T4 - nice tire with 51 psi max sidewall, same brand and tire make as on our 2003 Prius and they've been pretty good.
    • keep best tire case for spare - will shop for at 15" Toyota brand replacement wheel. I have time.
    • road hazard - not sure at this time
    • nitrogen - not sure, they would likely only give me door jam pressure and I'd still have to add air . . . probably go with stock air and not worry about it
So we've got a plan and I'm stickin' with it.

You were just kidding on this one, right? Nitrogen does nothing but draining money from the customer's pocket. :p

After everything, we're $300 'lighter' but with four new Sumitomo T4 195/65R15s. At 60 mph GPS true, the speedometer shows 61 mph like the OEM tires. Still, they have a 51 psi sidewall and I'll fully fill them tonight. Best of all, I can replace a failed one if the problem reoccurs. Meanwhile, the best of Avids is in a bag waiting for a 5th, hub to mount it ... our next full-side spare.

Had one that looked like that on our Subaru Forester a few years ago.

Is it just my imagination, or do more flats these days seem to be resulting in rim damage, requiring the purchase of a new wheel? Maybe because they are occurring at higher speeds?

On the plus side, it also seems to me that fewer blowouts are resulting in loss of control and fatal accidents than 40 years ago. Is that true? Was there some advance in technology that allows tires to fail in a way that doesn't lurch the car from side to side???? Or something else?

I have studied this in great depth, and based on years of research, I have concluded that optimal tire performance, longevity and economy ensure when you inflate them with a "cocktail" which combines 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide, a dash of water vapor to keep the rubber from drying out, and a secret combination of other "trace" gases which I've devised.

However, when using these gases, great care must be taken at all times to avoid inhaling them.

Fully inflated Sumitomos, the GPS 50 mph = indicated 50 mph. Not too shabby. I need to retest at 75 mph, the highest speed near Huntsville. So far, the Sumitomos are working as expected . . . nicely.

LATE THOUGHT: I don't have metrics for the original tires but these Sumitomos are very impressive. Seat of the pants, the ZVW30 really seemed to be performing better, lower rolling drag. I wished I had been able to instrument and document the effect but I'm 70% sure it is real and not an illusion.

Bob, side question - have you ever made a graph or collected data of your Prius Gen 3's acceleration from 0-70 in seconds? Just wondering - I think I saw a graph you did for your Gen 2.

Not yet. I have a GPS mouse but it only has 1 second resolution. I do have an Auto Enginuity but no maximum acceleration test, yet. I'm really waiting for the Fall when the new software should include the ZVW30. BTW, that was 0 to 100 mph with MPG. I want to do the same with our ZVW30.

For someone as in-tune with their vehicles as you are, Bob, I would say that it's probably not an illusion. I got some Firestone Affinity tires on mine a couple months ago, and noticed right away a quieter ride, but what appeared to be more rolling drag. I sort of confirmed this, based upon the lower MPG's I'm getting. However, that's a small sacrifice to me, given the much better ride that I had compared to the AVIDs. I was actually averaging higher MPGs during the winter with the Blizzaks on the car than I am with the Affinity tires. Of course, I had different wheels for the Blizzaks as well, so that could make a difference. I've also added the mud guards and removed the wheel covers (although, those are probably miniscule changes). Since the Affinity have 70k mile tread warranty, I figure I will deal with the 43 MPG on normal commute and 46-50 on highway commutes.
