Prius Sales are Exploding in Japan: 392% More than a Year Ago in July

I am from Canada and we get only a paltry $2,000 rebate for buying a hybrid. In spite of that I chose to buy a Prius. Expected fuel savings notwithstanding, a huge factor in my decision was the sheer number of hybrid vehicles that are finally coming out. This legitimized hybrid technology in my view and set aside whatever concerns I had with respect to reliability and resale value. And once I started seriously considering hybrids, it didn't take long to settle on a Prius as the best tradeoff between purchase cost, fuel economy and utility. I think this "legitimization" will be a big factor for many people and would expect huge increases in hybrid, and in particular, Prius sales...

 

No tax rebates on the Prius in the US any more. I was fortunate and got one on the TCH and the Tahoe, so I'm not complaining that much.

That earns Prius the top spot for an entire year, best-selling vehicle in Japan for 12 months in a row.

Well, the Prius sales are exploding not only in Japan - they do in my country too! When I bought mine a year ago (in April), a total of 3 (yes, *three*) Priuses were sold in the whole Czech republic that month . There were about 100 Priuses overall in the whole country these days if I'm not mistaken.

This April, the number skyrocketed to unbelievable 27 ! That's 800% increase . I think we are developing into one of the prime markets for Toyota :madgrin:.

The rest of the article repeated the recall reports without differentiating between the Prius specific, brake recall and the non-Prius recalls, guilt by association.

That's about double the US sales. It is Camry and Corolla numbers in the US.
