I lost my remaining SMS key over the weekend, so I had it towed to the dealer(after waiting for 3 hours for the tow to arrive as AAA sent a flatbed truck which couldnt tow it)

    New SMS key :$541

New Battery(warranty expired in February, and dealer said it was weak): $271

My shiny baby back from the shop: PRICELESS

There goes my vacation though, and I still can't get over how much one key costs.

I wonder, has anyone weighed one of their SKS keys? Are they possibly more expensive than gold, by weight?

Yes they are expensive. I believe you can try getting from ebay and have the dealer program it. I bet they will still charge you lots of $$ for that though.

The SKS fobs aren't anywhere near that expensive. By losing your only remaining key you forced the dealer into a more complex and therefor expensive programming process to use a new key fob. Normally they cost about half of what you paid.

The keys aren't typically that much. When I bought my '07 a few months ago it only came with one key. When I went to have another one made it was only about $200 or so and took them about 30 min to complete.

Forget getting the car programmed to accept a fob from eBay...

Can you elaborate on this? Is it too expensive or is there some other problem with the reprogramming?

The car cannot be programmed to accept a used fob. Once a fob (SKS) has been used 'x' times, it cannot be recognized by another car due to the rolling security codes. By used, I mean starting the car, not programming.

The price for the 12v is high. The chances of it failing inside of 3 years & 36000 miles are slight. The replacement has a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty.
