Modding console box.

    I installed avic z110bt and want to have usb, 1/8 av, and av2 input termials inside the console box. So made them. I've added subwoofer volume control there and it has nice small blue LED.

    Added more foam.

    That looks a lot cleaner than my cables just sitting through the opening that the aux plug came from. What did you use for the usb connection. Did you just drill then clue connectors on for the rca connectors?

    1. Remove felt from bottom of console
    2. Unbolt the 4 bolts (11 mm, I think)
    3. Remove cup holder from inside of console. It just sits loosely inside the console
    4. Remove the small black plastic cover, located at top front of console, which you just exposed by removing the cup holder. This requires some force, and great care must be used to avoid scratching it. You get a fingernail or soft plastic tool underneath it and lift straight up.
    5. When you get that SOB out, you will expose another 11 mm bolt. Remove it.
    6. You can now slide the entire console backwards. Move it slowly and gently, and it will unlatch and slide towards the rear seat.
    7. After the console separates, you will find a Molex electrical plug beneath the console that you need to unplug, then you can remove the entire thing.
    8. Clean up all the breadcrumbs you find underneath.
    EDIT: I attached a modified version of picture #2 from above. If you just want to run one cable, for an iPod or USB, for example, you can remove the little cover mentioned in Step 4. You don't have to remove the bolt beneath it, but you will see on both sides a rectangular hole that you can poke a USB (or other) cable through. You can then drill a small hole in the small black plastic cover to let the cable exit. This is not quite as clean as the setup above, but it will be fine for a USB stick, for example, which you can now easily attach/detach whenever you want.

    I HATE those instructions written by Mimes! I believe I would rather have the illiterate ones written by Chinese who don't speak any language than these pictographs that show little and explain less.

    There is room under the fixed part of the bridge. I can't remember how much since its been a while. There is not much room under the sliding part of the console.

    You mean the area that's practically on the floor, where the 12v power and optional seat heater buttons are? I haven't dug into that, but I don't like that spot. I keep a box of Kleenex there. It doesn't seem like a good place to attach temporary electronics such as cell phones and the like. You reach down there while you're driving, and it's curtains.

    If you check ipod interface cable installation manual, you get the idea of how to remove console.

    I bought panel mount RCA (Radio shack), 4 conductor 1/8, and USB port from online. And make 4 drill holes at the back of the console box.

    There is enough space to work with.

    I will try to explain. I don't have more pictures though.

    1. Part preparation.

    1-1 RCA jack.

    You can buy this one, but This one does not have color code and soldering involved.

    3-Terminal Audio/video Wall Plate : Wall Plates | RadioShack.com

    So I bought this. It has red, yellow and white termial. And it is just plug in type. It is like bolt and nut, Once you unscrew, you can have 3 termials for wall mount. Homedepot has them too.

    As for cable, i bought 3ft rca cable from monoprice. (3feet audio and video RCA cable)

    1-2 AV 1/8 jack,

    You can buy,
    4 Conductor 3.5MM Jack Panel Mount - VETCO.NET

    or
    3.5mm 4-Conductor TRRS Chassis Mount Snap-in Jack

    I bought second one. You need to buy a cable to. Just any ipod video cable or like this

    We need to cut rca port from the cable to solder to jack.

    1-3. USB jack

    I cannot find my model any more. But like this, you can lotate direction and a 3ft usb cable.

    2.disassemble console box.
    You can download ipod interface cable installation manual. It is well known.

    Remove 4 bolt from bottom of console box
    Remove small plastic part at the top of plastic cup.
    Remove bolt behind this small plasitc part

    Start to remove. But you should disconnect cable connector before removing the whole part. This small cable connector connects to the cable at the side of inner console and connects to 12V and Aux.

    3. After you have console box, disassemble side panel and back panel is straigt foward. Remove aux jack, I installed usb port to the original aux jack location.

    4. When you install usb port, opening for aux jack length is larger than port, width is fine. I cut the black dvd case and made a small cover. Make a hole at this small cover and insert usb jack and insert to the aux jack. Very tight fit. And screwd it.

    5. At the back of the inner console, made 4 holes matching size of port. Insert RCA and 1/8 4 conductor jack.

    RCA is plug type. But 1/8 4 conductor jack is solder type, you need to solder them.

    6. connect every wire. Plug usb cable and rca cables. And run through side of inner console. Wire is thick enough now. So you might need to cut little plastics at the side of inner console box.

    7. Put your console box back connecting every wire. (secure them with foam)

    My friend is asking me to do the same for his car... If I do his car, I will try to make complete step by step instruction.

    Oh and,

    If you see the pic2. At the bottom you can see male and male 3 rca connector, I used it to connect rca from console and rca from HU.

    At the back of inner console box, I bought three 90 angle connector for RCA cable connection, because my rca cable's head was big. There is around between 2inch and 3inch space between back from dash panel. If you buy solder type, you don't need this.

    When you connect these, don't forget securing them, I've used electrical tape and foam.

    Thanks, but I meant those dumb illustrations with absolutely no explanation on the Toyota sheets. You have been a model of clarity. Actually, compared to them, you are a teacher of rare insight.

    Seriously, thanks for explaining, but I was complaining about the guys from Toyota. I printed up the mime sheets and I will take it out to my car this weekend and try to match up the physical view with the illustration.

    All I really want to do is remove the console to clean up my I-phone installation, then put it back. What you did is far above my capabilities (and needs, for that matter.)

    You have done some really great work.

    Thanks. I would love to just be able to buy the toyota part, but may follow your example. Didn't even think of the rca's. Looks like I have some work to do.

    btw: Which speakers did you install in the other thread, and do you like them.

    Does Toyota sell USB jack alone? I know the jack is part of USB Port interface kit, PT233-47100.

    I went to Toyota dealer and found out the price of Jack. $130. I was told by part dude that I am better off going to junk yard and find 2010 Scion xB or 2011 Camry for the jack. :mad:

    I believe you both have Level II's with Polks... two questions if you would:

    1. netgo: Where did you install your crossovers?

    2. austingreen: What did you ultimately end up with for speakers?
