The RX450H requires Premium Fuel, 91 octane or better. The CR is 12.5:1.
87 octane will not run with 30% partial throttle in OTTO mode.

RX450h Owners Manual, section 6.1 Specifications, page 650

" If 91 octane cannot be obtained, you may use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating as low as 87 (Research Octane Number 91)."

Since the advent of EFI/SFI, knock sensors, and crankshaft position sensors, the engine control ECU has had the ability to detect if knock/ping is the result of the heat of combustion or otherwise.

Remember that knock/ping resulting from the heat of compression is unlikely to occur with partial cylinder filling, part throttle operation.

Nowadays knock/ping resulting from the heat of compression during non-stoichiometric operations can/is easily overcome via using EFI/SFI to further enrich the mixture.

With the use of DFI, OBVIOUSLY, detonation due to the heat of compression becomes much less probable.

No question about that. Most applications where the fuel system has not been designed to handle E85, seals are replaced as part of the retrofit (along with uprated injectors). With the prior knowledge that Ethanol is added to gasoline, I would be inclined to believe that manufacturers take the corrosive effect into consideration (as fuel system issues would be a major factor in the safety of a car).

Each spring for the past 4-5 years I have had to install a new carburator kit in each of my lawn/garden implements. The primary cause being the "swelling" of the small donut seal in the gas inlet to the float bowl.

not true. Most of your synthetic rubber is just fine for E85, and has been proven many times over.
