Greetings fellow Prius owners!

I have been going utterly nuts, and I have spent the past two weeks here searching on this forum and have tried resolving the issue based on my research here, but to no avail. My case involves a 2005 Prius with 55k miles on it with the problem of the master warning light (triangle with !), yellow brake light ( (!) ), airbag, and VSC lights coming on whilst driving. The car drives just perfectly fine without any discernible problems. Scan tool did not detect any codes. Tested the 12v auxiliary battery and it is strong with both voltage and amperage (even went as far as temporarily jury-rigging a fresh v12 battery in parallel with it to see if it would alleviate the problem). Inverter coolant pump runs well, coolant changed with appropriate Toyota Super Long Life coolant (50/50 mix) and system bled. Despite some drivers' concerns over disconnecting the 12v battery to reset the lights, this was done and the lights would go out, only to have them come on again after about 5-10 minutes of driving. Asides from the lights coming up, the car itself seems to be asymptomatic. Hybrid system appears to be running smooth and fine, SOC is good, asides from the lights the car drives very well. After searching on this forum, I just cannot seem to find a clear solution to this.

I implore anyone here to give me some insight into this and to let me know if I am missing anything. Thank you!

What is the accident history on this car?

I suggest that you have your local Toyota dealer retrieve the DTC on the car. With those warning lights on, it is guaranteed that DTC have been logged by the skid control and SRS ECUs (which a generic scan tool will not retrieve.)

The car did appear to have been in an accident in the past (was not in the Car Fax report when I bought it), but after I brought it home and did a very close-up detail inspection, it appears that the car was involved in a minor front end, driver-side collision that had been repaired--I have taken apart the steering pad (carefully) and inspected the spiral-cable/clockspring assembly and everything seems fine and working there. The car was bought with the lights already on (took a gamble with it). Could this be related to the accident?

It is very likely that the airbag light is related to the accident and incomplete repairs. Maybe another airbag fired and was not replaced correctly (driver's seat airbag or side curtain airbag, for example). Once you have the SRS ECU DTC then you'll have a better idea about that problem.

Regarding the VSC and yellow brake light, this shows you that the brake system is impaired. You'll need the DTC logged by the skid control ECU to pin this down further. This problem might or might not be related to accident damage.

Recently I had a small airbag light issue during the repairs to
AMAPOLA being rear-ended about a month ago. It may have
relevance here.

The air bags had not deployed. Immediately after the accident, I
noticed that the main airbag light in the center of the dash was
illuminated and the passenger side light said "OFF," despite there
being a person sitting there. The car appeared to operate normally
when I drove home, ~eight miles. My ScanGauge did not show any
"thrown" codes."

After talking to my insurance carrier, I took the car into the shop the
next day.

When I went to pick up my car after repairs were "completed," I
noticed that the lights were still in the immediate post accident
condition. ALL STOP! I checked my Owner's Manual  and it said the
car sould be taken to a Toyota dealer immediately. I reported the
same to the body shop and refused to accept the car. They "would get
right on it," even though there was some noticeable concern on their
part that the condition might not be related to the accident!

The next day the car was reported ready to pick up again, with no air
bag warnings illuminated. I found that to be true. I asked what they
had done by way of correction.

The repair shop had driven the car to the nearest Toyota dealership,
about five miles distant. There the techs had read out a "stored
collision code" in whatever ECU controls the passenger side air bag. It
was then cleared.

So, if I got a true story, apparently the code is routinely logged and
the warnings illuminated at some force/acceleration level below the
air bag activation level. It might just be Toyota covering it's butt, but
then again, it might be a meaningful reminder to prudent operators to
have the car checked over after a non-air bag activating incident.

I suspect that the illuminated air bag lights could very well be "left
over" from the earlier accident.

Thank you for the responses thus far!

Patrick: That is one thing that I had not considered, the passenger-side airbag. I will have the DTC scan as soon as I can (even though I am rather hesitant since my over-zealous prejudice against dealers and mechanics dictates that there is not an honest one among them).

Rokeby: Your case has me thinking a lot about that now. You mentioned that your airbag light came on, but did the master warning light come on also?

The strange thing about my case is that when I leave the 12v battery disconnected (again, as I mentioned before, despite doomsday warnings from other people to not do this), it clears the lights until about 5-10 minutes of driving when all four lights pop up at once. The car drives just fine, and the brakes seem very, very good (a bit too good, though, not used to having brakes that light and responsive, almost jerky if I do not ease into braking).

I can't say for sure. I think it did. In my minds eye I can see
it on with the airbag lights. But then, I've had it come on at other times
when I tried to drive with the driver's door not fully closed, which I may
have tried to do after the accident.

Given the complexity of the HSD's operating algorithms, this wouldn't
surprise me. But I would question whether the lights are triggered by
time, distance travelled, or as the result of some lengthy string of error
finding routines involving both time and distance. Perhaps it might
even be the result of the HSD relearning something after "losing it's
memory" due no 12V power. I'm not sufficiently HSD smart myself to
say.

There's really no problem disconnecting the 12V battery, as you've learned from your own experience.

What mpg is the car logging? I wonder if the car is relying solely on friction braking (and not regen).

The logic associated with turning on the warning lights can be complex, and may require certain operating parameters to be achieved before the lights will come on (like the problem happening twice, or subject to operating temp being achieved, etc.)

Regarding reading the skid control ECU and SRS ECU DTC, it is possible to retrieve and clear blink codes by shorting terminals 4 and 13 within the DLC3 connector. I've previously posted on this, and you can also download Toyota repair manual info at techinfo.toyota.com to obtain the specifics regarding how to do this and what the various blink codes mean. However if other ECUs have logged DTC you will not be able to retrieve those DTC via blink codes.

Re: Master warning, airbag lights comes up

Similar SRS Airbag light illuminates and causing breaks to grab or slip/slight accelerate at VERY slow speeds 1 mph down to 0 mph. Jerky brake grab at the final transition to stop.

I can temporally reset the light (turn it off): by disconnecting/then reconnecting all three connectors under the driver seat while the key is not in the ignition. I might get five to twenty miles of proper brake performance from the car until during driving the SRS airbag red dash warning light again illuminates. New 12V battery in place.

Air bag warning light 1st appeared around these events:

1. Very low battery voltage output (11 then down to 9.3V) – battery now replaced
2. Small impact with a curb drivers side tire went flat/no rim damage
a. Replaced the front tire w/same size/different brand possible slight tire size imbalance?

3. Creaking sound in right front brake. Suspect lack of lube on brake slide - Pads replaced/rotors turned

4. Reoccurring SRS bag light illuminated just after temporary loss of full engine power while driving (I thought I had a temporary fuel delivery problem). Chugged a bit and then drove fine except for the re-illuminated SRS warning light
Anyone have an idea where this evidence points?
