High heat paint OK for exhaust pipes?

You're exhaust pipes should not rust on the Prius. They are just discolored.

 

IF you're pipes are rusting.. i'd recommend wire brushing them and wiping them off before applying this paint. otherwise, this paint should work for your needs.

 

looks like rust. i know i have rust on my exhaust system.... shrug...

some recommend not painting it.

it really comes down to a pre treatment. you can't have the metal be moist and you don't want air to be trapped under the paint. i know rust-oleum is good at this type of project as i used to sell it when i worked for Ace Hardware. I also have used high temp paint on my exhaust in the past (previous car)

worse comes to worse, you'll smell it for a couple days as it heats up... even worse, being it will flake off.

 

I had no rust on my 04 exhaust system after 5 years of driving, including winter driving over salt treated roads. Yes, it had a surface coating, which could be wiped off, but I certainly would not consider it true oxidation of the metal.

 

I painted the mulffler connections and the back of the muffler on my 07 to both protect it and black it out from behind. I used this exact product you listed. It looked good.

My muffler had no corrosion before painting. It lasted about 6 months and now is flaking off. But it looked good for quite a while. Worked pretty good.

I also used it on my Crown Vic new dual exhaust connections as an anti-rust and its holding up pretty good for about a year now. But those were new clean metal connections and welds not rusted.

 

Congrats on that, I think it's maintenance which is saving your exhaust from getting rusted. Once rust sets in it's bound to deteriorate however we try to prevent it. Btw is the process called oxidation or galvanization of iron?
