Just the opposite of a runaway Prius, my 2002 no longer starts!

jk450: Thanks for the info. Which manual do you recommend?

I stopped by a dealership last week an was quoted:
    00400-RM883U1 Vol. 1 - $98.94
    00400-RM883U2 Vol. 2 - $82.46

The Chilton manual (RM957U) is available electronically at my local library.

I would be remiss if I didn't note that someone recently posted the entire Toyota Gen I Prius repair manual as a PDF on this forum. I don't remember which thread it was in; perhaps someone else does.

I'm not fond of such behavior, but that's water under the bridge at this point.

There are capacitors inside the inverter that can "hold" a charge for a rather long time. Wait an hour after "opening" the center of HV battery (service plug), then use a DC volt meter to make sure all is bled down at the inverter b4 touching any cables etc. I like to remove the two cables from the hv battery first, then work on the others. This way there is no way hv can accidentally make it's way to the inverter or you!

Your recommendations differ from Toyota's procedures. Are those procedures in error?

That is what "do it yourself" or "shade tree" mechanics do. We find different ways to approach a problem.
Then volunteer the Toyota procedure to compare and contrast with his recommendations. Different is not criticism of someone else's approach, it is just another way to skin the cat.

I have no problem with measuring the inverter, battery interface to make sure the caps are discharged or at a low enough voltage. However, the one hour break sounds like an 'early lunch' or a chance to think about the next steps. Still, respecting charged capacitors, no argument from me.

Actually, no. You are referring to methods that folks resort to when the preferred method is unavailable. In this case, however, Toyota's procedure is readily available, and requires only a simple voltmeter.

You have mentioned many times that you have purchased the repair manuals for the Generation 1 Prius. If so, then you have access to that procedure. Why not avail yourself of the manual and read about it?

Thanks, but I prefer to write my own posts, and to first allow w2co the opportunity to respond. And again, you can look up the procedure yourself if you wish.

There has been no criticism of w2co's methods. Only questions so far.

Actually, it's a requirement. Again, I would really recommend reading the manual. It would take you no more than a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the procedure prior to commenting on it.

We're just trying to help you move from confrontational to collaboration. I know, it is hard, but it is how to gain respect by not tearing down others:
    An interesting question indeed:
Then defend or better still, show off the Toyota procedure by sharing them. Show that you're here to help. Everyone else does. Put the thread back on the tracks after that distinctly, challenging question, "Are those procedures in error?"

I disagree. It appears to me that you are looking to pick a fight.

I am not trying to gain your respect.

Toyota's procedure doesn't need my defense. You can read it for yourself and make up your own mind about it. You have the procedure; if it troubles you so much not to see it in this thread, post it yourself.

I've asked w2co a question; if the question bothers you, feel free to move on to another thread.

I'm sure folks can decide for themselves. I'm not trying to impress anyone.

Let me stop you right there. My question to w2co was directly relevant to that forum member's statement.

My goodness, this is a simple technical discussion. Why the anger?

    Just wondering...
Did he specifically mention that the procedures are in error?

    Just addressing your question:
Trot out the Toyota procedure and then defend it against . . . who? All I've asked that you answer your question by bringing the facts and data to the discussion, the Toyota procedure.

    Since no one else answered:

    • 00400-RM883U1 Vol. 1 - diagnostics, the home of codes and how to figure out what is wrong
    • 00400-RM883U2 Vol. 2 - procedures, step-by-step
I bought both manuals and EWD493U "Electrical Wiring Diagram" when I ordered my 2003 Prius. These manuals do show up on Ebay from time to time.

No. That's why I asked, given that w2co's procedures are quite specific. Perhaps his procedures are in error. Perhaps they are an improvement on Toyota's procedures. I really can't say without knowing the rationale behind the recommendations.

Which sentence confuses you? Here are his original quote broken down into individual sentences:

    • "There are capacitors inside the inverter that can "hold" a charge for a rather long time."
    • "Wait an hour after "opening" the center of HV battery (service plug), then use a DC volt meter to make sure all is bled down at the inverter b4 touching any cables etc."
    • "I like to remove the two cables from the hv battery first, then work on the others."
    • "This way there is no way hv can accidentally make it's way to the inverter or you!"
His posting is clear, where is yours and any part of the Toyota procedure? This is your question:

Only you know. I have no idea why you demanded that I "defend" Toyota's procedure, nor as to who you would have wanted me to defend it against, nor why you were making such demands after claiming to encourage collaboration as opposed to confrontation.

How would you safely disable the Generation 1 Prius HV system prior to working on the inverter?

    Defend your own question:
Bring the Toyota procedure to compare and contrast. Everyone else is ready and willing to post technical details ... where is yours?

    None of them confuse me.

Thanks, but I've read it already. Let's give w2co the opportunity to respond to the question.

He'll answer in his own time but for now, I'm here and asking you to backup your earlier claim. After all, it is your question:
Post the Toyota procedures that only you've brought in via the question. Actually, just implied without backup.

I look for patterns in life and I've noticed these questions fit a 'passive-aggressive' pattern like the old canard, "Have you stopped beating your wife?" Like FOX News, they wrap an accusation inside a question and claim it has merit. The FOX pattern is:
    "Why doesn't <target> answer <accusation>?"
It is not really a question seeking knowledge and insight, especially when the questioner claims some unrevealed knowledge. Rather such questions are meant to mislead those unsure of themselves into silence or chase off anyone who doesn't have time to waste dealing with such nonsense.

The pattern is clear as is their archilles heel, their inability to offer constructive or original facts and data. The right answer in every case, especially if the questioner shows no evidence of caring for society, is to call their bluff. Ask them to show their alleged expertise behind their passive-aggressive question and show evidence by sharing the facts and data.

I respectfully request the discussion about the safety wait time in the Toyota procedures NOT be conducted on this thread.

Thanks to Dirk for stopping by with his Autoenginuity scanner yesterday evening and reading the codes. He only got the P3125 plus a C1259. No informational subcodes at all. He will be checking with Autoenginuity today to determine why.

Not a problem. I'm more thn happy to accomodate such a request.

That is, unfortunately, not unusual for Autoenginuity. Their coverage is hit-and-miss.

Excellent! Although not perfect, it is the best available in the price range.
