I admit to ignorance regarding how big my sailing yacht should be. I'd research it if it made a difference, but since I cannot have a boat due to my seasickness, I figure 100 feet is a good round figure.

As for crew size, whatever it takes to actually sail the boat, and then double that or add half a dozen. An all-girl crew can hardly be too large. Besides, extra crew means none of them has to work as hard. And if some are washed overboard in a storm, there are still some left to sail the boat.

As for passengers, I would not want to be a passenger. I'd want to help sail the boat. And I don't think I'd be interested in inviting the sort of people who would rather sit around all day on a deck chair than pull on ropes. That's mostly what we did on the Lord Nelson, was pull on ropes, though we also swabbed the decks and peeled potatoes in the galley. (And one day they assigned me to make the tea. Can you believe that? A whole shipload of Brits and they assign tea-making to the only Yank on board! So in the end they had to do it all over again because apparently you can't just dump some tea into boiling water. At least I figured they probably didn't want me to dump the tea into the ocean, where tea really belongs! -- Oops. I hope Octavia does not read this. Don't anybody tell her I said that, please.)

But my sailboat would be big, and would carry only crew, no passengers.

But it's good to know I would not need propane for cooking.

Too bad none of this is ever going to happen. Not unless they discover a cure for seasickness.

Okay, I just checked. The dolphin boat I was on is 91 feet long. (Though it's a power boat, not a sailboat.) I think it can carry something like 15 or 20 passengers and 4 or 5 crew. So I'll say 75 feet would be adequate for my sailing yacht. Of course there would be no power capstans, because what's the fun in that? Sails and anchors should be raised by hand, the whole crew turning the capstan while singing sea shanties. And that's another reason for a large crew. All those athletic, scantily-clad women and me toiling away to raise the anchor, singing "Weigh haul away..." I sure wish someone would find a cure for seasickness before I'm too old to help all those girls work the capstan.

Well, now that we're discussing sailboats, which is a far more pleasant topic than religion....:)

....I figure it's too big if I can't sail it myself. Which is why I said 10 metres. I'm thinking of a folding trimaran, which can be hauled around on a trailer. At times, I rather enjoy the company of others. At other times, I much prefer my own company. If I can't sail off into the sunrise by myself, there's no point spending years researching and building the ultimate sailboat. I'll just go for a hike in the mountains.

And yes, though I never thought I'd hear myself say it, there probably is such a thing as too many scantily clad women. (I don't go for all-you-can-eat smorgasbords anymore, either.) I'm not as young as I used to be, and I can only handle so many women at a time. Practically speaking, if that's the way I'm gonna go, I'll just do it on land and save myself all that trouble of building the boat. ;)

I would no more sail out of sight of land alone than I would hike alone. But then, for me this is just a fantasy. I'm never going to own a sailboat.

But, being as it is a fantasy:

I would not spend years researching and building a boat. I'd advertise for a captain and crew, and once I had hired them, I'd use their expertise in selecting the boat.

As for too many women, even in my fantasy I have no expectation that any of them would have sex with me. So I'm not talking of a harem here. Just female companionship. Women are more interesting to be with, and more fun, than men are.

I've sailed alone, though not offshore yet, and I hike alone all the time. It's safer than being a pedestrian in the city, and probably safer than driving to the hiking destination. I usually cycle alone, too, on trips as long as six weeks. So far. ;)

Yeah. Funny how that is, eh? :)

    Touche!

... But I'm still not comfortable going alone into the wilderness. Of course, I'm not comfortable driving either, after watching that red-light video. :scared:

And this is probably as good a place as any to say I'll be off-line for a while. I'll be back before you can count to a million or so. (Or instead of counting you can just enjoy the peace and quiet. :D )
