Will be changing my oil next weekend. My local autoparts store lists the "Ryco Z386" oil filter for the Gen II prius. Is that ok to use or should I just get one from the dealer?

Well, according to: Ryco's catalog That's the right model filter... But I don't know how good their filters are - quality wise. Keep in mind that there are many different makers of filters... If you trust that brand of oil filters, then go for it.

If they have Bosch or Purolator ONE, go for that. Or else OEM... not sure about Ryco.

Ryco filter is very popular in Australia, which is where the OP lives

Yep jayman, I was forgetting that this brand is probably mostly used in just Australia and NZ. They used to be made in Australia so popular here, but I just picked one up today and now it says "Made in China" (like most stuff around here). Anyway it looks ok as far as visual inspection goes, construction thread and seal etc all look ok. I still might take a trip to the dealer now and get a genuine part to compare.

FYI - at least in the US, the replacement Toyota oil filter sold by dealers is made in Thailand.
